By Natalie Superman/Wonder Woman, Vol. 3: Casualties of War by Peter J. Tomasi, Doug Mahnke (Illustrations), Jaime Mendoza (Illustrations)begins with a flashback to Wonder Woman and Superman’s first meeting in the pages of Justice League, then slips into the present time as Clark is attempting to create a written memorial to those that they were not able to save. Clark's endeavors are cut short by Diana though as it’s date night and she wants to get a move on.In typical superhero fashion, date night doesn’t even really get started because they are pulled away to an emergency and there they encounter an unknown metahuman calling himself Wonderstar. Who is he, and what is his ultimate purpose? Follow Superman and Wonder Woman’s adventure as they unravel the history of Wonderstar. Features a New 52 Origin Story from a character probably best remembered from the pages of Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross.I feel like the story aspects of this volume are it’s biggest selling points. It contains a complete story with a clear beginning and end, making this a good jumping on point, or gift volume for the approaching holiday season. Peter J. Tomasi’s story is a solid read, and explores the theme of superheros seeing past the big picture to how their actions might have impacts on individual lives. I would like to say a little more but I can’t without giving away the mystery of the story and spoiling it for you.I’m somewhat torn about the artwork. The illustrations are dynamic, vibrantly colored, and have good overall composition; but those with a discerning eye will note weaknesses in the facial work. This can sometimes be off-putting as we have a tendency to first look at characters facial expressions before we notice the larger aspects of the artwork. More attention should have been given to maintaining a congruent look throughout the panels. So, I can’t in honesty say it’s all good, but it’s far, far from being all bad.I received a review copy of this work via NetGalley.

Tomasi takes over writing on Superman/Wonder Woman with volume 3, Casualties of War. The story involves Wonder Woman and Superman dealing with some fallout from the first time they met, five years prior during the attempted invasion of Earth by Apokolips and Darkseid. In the midst of this, the super couple meets Wonderstar, a young superhero with no memory of who he is or how he got his powers. As the mystery progresses, Magog is introduced in to the New 52 universe, and Superman and Wonder Woman are also confronted by a classic villain from Wonder Woman’s past, also making her New 52 debut.Tomasi’s story is okay, but not spectacular. I felt like the previous two collections were outstanding and fresh, while this one had a recycled feel to it, partially due to the New 52 universe and having to bring in old villains in new ways. Additionally, Tomasi does not utilize many of the changes Diana has been going through in the pages of Wonder Woman, other than to touch on her role as the God of War.The best part of the story was Wonder Woman’s growth as a character, from who she was when she came to the world of man, to who she is after five years living among people. She has become more human, for lack of a better term, and lost some of the hard Amazonian edge. She and Superman are a good team, and complement each other. He brings out the humanity in her, while she often forces him to make tough decisions. The art by Doug Mahnke is nice, and complements the story.Overall, I think this was an average Superman/Wonder Woman story. It’s a good place for new readers to jump in, and current fans may enjoy it. However, Superman/Wonder Woman Vol. 3: Casualties of War, by Peter J. Tomasi, didn’t bring a whole lot of new ideas to the party. Hopefully this volume was just laying the groundwork to return this series to its earlier levels.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Angelica Quintero I love Superman and Wonder Woman and when I see a comic of them together I just have to jump to it because there’s nothing more perfect than my favorite couple of superheroes in love and fighting together! In Casualties of War, Superman and Wonder Woman meet this new superhero, Wonderstar, who doesn’t know where he comes from but he claims he wants to help. But… Superman and Wonder Woman don’t trust him completely and found out he was is one powerful villain who is connected to Circe, one evil witch who is after Wonder Woman. The evil ones tried to use Superman and Wonder Woman’s relationship against them, making them choose between saving each other or mankind. You’ll have to read this great comic to know what superheroes would do about this evil demands.I really enjoyed this comic. From the beginning I was hooked with all the graphics and action scenes. Later when they were being a “normal” couple, having a date and all, I thought they were adorable. And much later, when the real action started, all the secrets were revealed about Wonderstar true identity, about who was behind his power and how he and Circe used Superman and Wonder Woman’s love for each other against them, I just couldn’t put it down.I love how Wonder Woman stood as the powerful woman she is, as THE GOD OF WAR. She made choices in the past that now are causing them trouble, but she knew what to do to solve them all.I love how Superman fought side by side with Wonder Woman. At the beginning of the comic I felt like there was going to be a “Who’s the boss/Who’s stronger/Who punches harder” problem between them, but thank God I was wrong. They make an amazing team, even when Superman was under the influence of Circe’s powers.Great comic. Can’t wait to read more about the ultimate power couple.

It has a rather straightforward plot with few real twists, but it doesn't need twists because it's strong enough to stand as it is. The characters are a bit simple yet in a way that makes them feel more real than someone whose motives and history need to be peeled away layer by layer over hundreds of pages. (Hint: the best characters are always like this.) The humor is witty and genuine, at times sharp and at times affectionate, but always clever. In other words, I'm ridiculously biased and cannot recommend this series enough. I love it. As soon as I heard it was getting an official translation, I knew I'd be snapping it up as soon as possible. And thankfully, everyone who worked on it at Seven Seas did justice to it all. I was delayed in getting the latter three omnibus volumes, but the whole thing was very worth the wait. I hope Satoshi Mizukami keeps making manga for a long time, and that Seven Seas will bring English-speakers more of his work. It's hard to talk about this final collection without spoilers, except to say that as much love was shown to it every step of the way as all the previous volumes. The final battle takes up more than half of this collection, but never felt drawn out to me. The few lingering mysteries are wrapped up and explained. At its absolute worst you could say the conclusion feels a little longer than it needs to be, to cover everyone, but I like the characters enough that I don't mind taking a little long to say goodbye. It's a little sad, but in all the right ways.Dang it, just read it already.

By Sean There aren't enough words to summarize my love for this series. If one more glowing, positive review can get someone to give it a shot, I'll be the one to write it.This volume is the hard-fought conclusion, and it would be apt to call it a pay-off for the reader as well. This series' greatest flaw is in its build up, the early chapters are plodding and the art is middling - but it's greatest strength in how all of these things are refined and improved upon as the chapters progress (particularly the art). This holds true all the way until the very end, there is a passion that went into the creation of this series that never waned for a second. Those early volumes are not bad, far from it, but the finale and everything leading up to it is spectacular and bordering upon perfection. What I like best about Biscuit Hammer is that it's a fantastic, crazy, life-or-death tale that is always inescapably grounded in humanity and mired in emotion. The fate of the world is always at stake throughout the story, and yet somehow what takes center stage is the way out protagonists cope with love and loss, friendship and betrayal, fear and bravery. There are so many characters, and while individually their complexity suffers for lack of attention, they somehow wind up better for it. We're only shown the part of them integral to the story being told, and always led to believe that there is more - much more - lurking beneath. The characters feel human, thanks to the questions left unanswered, the questions begged, even the distinctly non-human entities. And all the while it manages to be fantastic, over the top, and flashy as any other shounen series tries to be. There are notes in this story that call to mind moments from other series like Eureka 7 and Gurren Lagann, but it's not running through a checklist or plugging those things in, it's merely playing a similar chord. Those high points are as spectacular as they are in any other story, and yet still supported by the humanity of it all. They aren't set pieces, or just cool moments, they feel like part of the natural progression of things.I have a keen suspension of disbelief and maybe I'm just a little susceptible to this sort of thing, but there are moments in this final volume that make me cry every time I read it. I never feel like the story is tugging at heart strings for the sake of it, but it manages to do it so well. The ending to this story is perfect - it won't leave you wanting for anything. You will be so content with how it ended that you'll be left with only your personal acceptance of the fact that it's over to contend with.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely excellent. By Amazon Customer An entire volume is given not only to the best boss rush in manga history, but also an emotional resolution to almost every character present, whether subtly or overtly. It's one of the most satisfying manga that nobody knows about.

Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because none of the writing or characters really blew me away--it felt like we weren By Eric Stanton A solid intro. Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because none of the writing or characters really blew me away--it felt like we weren't going beyond the surface at all, and not all pages were utilized to the best effect. The writer dawdled too long on some aspects of the word and skimped on others that would have lent more complexity to the characters. Maybe future installments will make up for that. Still, it's a good concept, with enough interest in the characters and story for me to buy the second book. I get a very strong feeling that the next book is going to either be amazing or totally bomb; if it has the same pace and character depth as this book I'm not coming back for the third, but after the setup Blood and Magic gives, it definitely also has potential to dig deep and knock my socks off. Very interested where it goes from here, because like I said, I think the second book is going to be much more telling on the overall quality of the series.

Mystifying comic collection about supernatural creatures living amongst us today By PaulAllard The main character, Wolfe, is an immortal in Los Angeles where there seem to be others with different powers (vampires, werewolves, mind-readers…). There are rivalries among the supernatural and Wolf walks a fine line between the dominating powers like a 1940s-style PI. The plot is quite confusing, jumping from one situation to another and also from flashbacks to the present. The artwork is basic and not particularly detailed (not my cup of tea). I did not enjoy this enough ot want ot find out what happens next. Disappointing.

For whatever reason, my eyes like what they're seeing now and i can't tell if my senses have been worn down and it's all the same or if the quality I disliked before has become more subtle. These stories are so great and of course it is still important to get them in every other format you can. This is an essential volume and a fun way to re-read these extremely re-readable stories. As usual (with the Darkhorse volumes lately), I miss the professional EC fan-critics' writings analyzing these much-analyzed stories and yapping about the storywriting, artists, and fan response to EC (but i guess it's hard to imagine that there's much more hyperbole to spew and the facts are pretty well told already). If you own it in another format and you're broke, no need to rush to buy this format. If you don't already own some version of these stories, go * The EC Archives: The Haunt of Fear Volume 2, by Various

Birds Of Prey Collected from the Beginning By Stephen Vincent Kempton It was exactly twenty years this month that the first Birds Of Prey special was released in November 1995. DC Comics seemed unwilling to commit to full fledged series so between 1995 and 1998 a whole slew of one shots , one mini-series and an appearance in the anthology series Showcase 96 all came out. These all appeared one after another. This 288 page collection is the start of DC's attempt to collect all the Birds appearances in chronological order. The paper is slick and glossy with a card stock cover.Birds Of Prey was created by Chuck Dixon , a top notch Action writer who started by writing the adventures of Airboy for Eclipse Comics. Gary Frank, current British superstar did the first special and remained on the project by doing all the covers in this collection. Editor Jordan B. Gorfinkel was the third creator. He would go on to write their 2nd adventure for Showcase 96.The original team is only the crippled Barbara Gordon former Batgirl now called Oracle. Plus Dinah Lance , Black Canary. She is a down on her luck, and recovering from the death of Oliver Queen. The first special was a massive 56 pager from Dixon and Frank. Gary Frank early art here resembles Steranko and Paul Gulacy. This excellent start gives us the first globe hopping adventure and brings back Dixon's villainess Lynx.Next is the Showcase adventure which is by Gorfinkel and new artist Jennifer Graves. The art is rather pedestrian compared to the others in this collection. It teams Black Canary with Lois Lane.Next up is the Birds Of Prey four issue series called Manhunt. Chuck Dixon returns and Matt Haley takes over the art. Haley is another excellent artist. This time Black Canary teams up with The Huntress and Catwoman much to dismay of Oracle. Lady Shiva also makes an appearance working for the bad guys. The next one shot is called Revolution and it ends in a rift between Oracle and Black Canary. Dixon teams with Italian artist Stefano Raffaele. The next one shot called Wolves picks up on the continuity from the last book with gals not working together. This is my favorite story from the collection as Oracle and Black Canary have parallel solo adventures and bad romances. It nice to see more of Barbara , and especially Barbara in action. The late Dick Giordano penciled the Dixon story. We conclude with the final one shot titled Batgirl. Since at the time no Batgirl existed in the DC Universe this one will leave you confused until close to the end when an explanation is made. This story is by Dixon and Greg Land. Land would be involved with the characters when they finally get their own book in 1999.The second collection is all ready solicited and should be as much fun as this inexpensive volume.Highly Recommended.
