By Natalie Superman/Wonder Woman, Vol. 3: Casualties of War by Peter J. Tomasi, Doug Mahnke (Illustrations), Jaime Mendoza (Illustrations)begins with a flashback to Wonder Woman and Superman’s first meeting in the pages of Justice League, then slips into the present time as Clark is attempting to create a written memorial to those that they were not able to save. Clark's endeavors are cut short by Diana though as it’s date night and she wants to get a move on.In typical superhero fashion, date night doesn’t even really get started because they are pulled away to an emergency and there they encounter an unknown metahuman calling himself Wonderstar. Who is he, and what is his ultimate purpose? Follow Superman and Wonder Woman’s adventure as they unravel the history of Wonderstar. Features a New 52 Origin Story from a character probably best remembered from the pages of Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross.I feel like the story aspects of this volume are it’s biggest selling points. It contains a complete story with a clear beginning and end, making this a good jumping on point, or gift volume for the approaching holiday season. Peter J. Tomasi’s story is a solid read, and explores the theme of superheros seeing past the big picture to how their actions might have impacts on individual lives. I would like to say a little more but I can’t without giving away the mystery of the story and spoiling it for you.I’m somewhat torn about the artwork. The illustrations are dynamic, vibrantly colored, and have good overall composition; but those with a discerning eye will note weaknesses in the facial work. This can sometimes be off-putting as we have a tendency to first look at characters facial expressions before we notice the larger aspects of the artwork. More attention should have been given to maintaining a congruent look throughout the panels. So, I can’t in honesty say it’s all good, but it’s far, far from being all bad.I received a review copy of this work via NetGalley.

Tomasi takes over writing on Superman/Wonder Woman with volume 3, Casualties of War. The story involves Wonder Woman and Superman dealing with some fallout from the first time they met, five years prior during the attempted invasion of Earth by Apokolips and Darkseid. In the midst of this, the super couple meets Wonderstar, a young superhero with no memory of who he is or how he got his powers. As the mystery progresses, Magog is introduced in to the New 52 universe, and Superman and Wonder Woman are also confronted by a classic villain from Wonder Woman’s past, also making her New 52 debut.Tomasi’s story is okay, but not spectacular. I felt like the previous two collections were outstanding and fresh, while this one had a recycled feel to it, partially due to the New 52 universe and having to bring in old villains in new ways. Additionally, Tomasi does not utilize many of the changes Diana has been going through in the pages of Wonder Woman, other than to touch on her role as the God of War.The best part of the story was Wonder Woman’s growth as a character, from who she was when she came to the world of man, to who she is after five years living among people. She has become more human, for lack of a better term, and lost some of the hard Amazonian edge. She and Superman are a good team, and complement each other. He brings out the humanity in her, while she often forces him to make tough decisions. The art by Doug Mahnke is nice, and complements the story.Overall, I think this was an average Superman/Wonder Woman story. It’s a good place for new readers to jump in, and current fans may enjoy it. However, Superman/Wonder Woman Vol. 3: Casualties of War, by Peter J. Tomasi, didn’t bring a whole lot of new ideas to the party. Hopefully this volume was just laying the groundwork to return this series to its earlier levels.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Angelica Quintero I love Superman and Wonder Woman and when I see a comic of them together I just have to jump to it because there’s nothing more perfect than my favorite couple of superheroes in love and fighting together! In Casualties of War, Superman and Wonder Woman meet this new superhero, Wonderstar, who doesn’t know where he comes from but he claims he wants to help. But… Superman and Wonder Woman don’t trust him completely and found out he was is one powerful villain who is connected to Circe, one evil witch who is after Wonder Woman. The evil ones tried to use Superman and Wonder Woman’s relationship against them, making them choose between saving each other or mankind. You’ll have to read this great comic to know what superheroes would do about this evil demands.I really enjoyed this comic. From the beginning I was hooked with all the graphics and action scenes. Later when they were being a “normal” couple, having a date and all, I thought they were adorable. And much later, when the real action started, all the secrets were revealed about Wonderstar true identity, about who was behind his power and how he and Circe used Superman and Wonder Woman’s love for each other against them, I just couldn’t put it down.I love how Wonder Woman stood as the powerful woman she is, as THE GOD OF WAR. She made choices in the past that now are causing them trouble, but she knew what to do to solve them all.I love how Superman fought side by side with Wonder Woman. At the beginning of the comic I felt like there was going to be a “Who’s the boss/Who’s stronger/Who punches harder” problem between them, but thank God I was wrong. They make an amazing team, even when Superman was under the influence of Circe’s powers.Great comic. Can’t wait to read more about the ultimate power couple.
