This book presents a complex subject matter in a new format. My teen likes all of these books, and we often find the 9yo reading them as well. These books often offer some pages of detailed explanations in addition to the drawings, so there is more depth of information than you may initially expect.

Brilliant, Clever and Engaging Way to Study Physiology By Dee Long If only Manga Guides were available when we were struggling to make sense of subjects related to math and chemistry in high school. This manga guide on Physiology, one part of a series of nine guides, is presented in an absolutely brilliant format to not only make it understandable but also to make learning about the intricate and amazing processes of the human body more fun! Kudos to Etsuro Tanaka and Keiko Koyama for the clever and engaging cartoon storyline and text that explains the mystery of human physiology.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fun, Well Illustrated, Written by a Teacher and Medical Doctor & I Wish It Had Been Around for High School Health :-) By Ira Laefsky Like all of the Manga Guide educational series, the guide to Physiology is fun, well illustrated (for both learning and entertainment), written by a subject matter expert, and extremely well organized for learning in this case containing easier Manga Comic explanations and succinct textual explanations giving further detail. Whether you want to understand basic in office Medical Tests including EKG's Spirometery and Blood Pressure Measurements, are taking a physiology course as part of Allied Health Professional Education, or "merely" want to understand the processes that make your human body work, this book is understandable and highly edifying.Recommended, for students, health professional education, and anyone who wants to know how their body works.

28 of 28 people found the following review helpful. This series is just plain fun By Corinne H. Smith Mennonite B&B proprietor Magdalena Yoder defies stereotype. She possesses a wry wit, a caustic tongue, and a mind for metaphor. Yet she's not above allowing her thoughts to dwell on people doing "the horizontal hootchy-kootchy" or "the mattress mambo." She knows her Bible and the commandments through and through, but she's got enough common sense to know when circumstances demand that the rules be bent a little. That's always the case whenever she stumbles upon a murder and feels the need to find the perpetrator. In this episode, millionaire Colonel George Custard comes to the PennDutch Inn in his limo, accompanied by two servants. The bad news is, he has plans to build a huge hotel that will destroy small-town Hernia's ambiance. The good news is, he's soon murdered, and Magdalena leads the investigation. She *has* to, doesn't she? The local law officials -- her dim-witted brother-in-law and his Tammy-Fay-Mimi-Bobeck-clone sidekick -- are clueless and useless. And they're just two of the many unique characters that pepper this community.I wouldn't want to meet Magdalena Yoder in person. (If any of us did, we'd miss out on all the wonderful thoughts zipping around in her noggin.) I might want to be a small mouse instead and watch her from a distance ... though I'd surely be in trouble if she spied me and raised a size-eleven Brogan to my body.Another fun addition to a entertaining series.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. All in good fun By Karen Potts Magdalena Yoder is back with another interesting guest, Colonel George Custard, at her inn. She finds him an attractive man until she discovers that he plans to build a 5-star hotel which will be in direct competition with her PennDutch Inn. When the colonel is found dead, there are no end of suspects in Hernia, because many of the townspeople opposed the new hotel which they felt would change the slow pace of the town which they had always enjoyed. Interspersed with the mystery are humorous interludes with a 25-foot snake and Magdalena's intrepid fiance,Gabe. As usual, it is up to Magdalena to solve the mystery because the town's policeman, her brother-in-law, is not up to the task. This book will not disappoint Tamar Myers' fans.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The series is improving as time goes on. By Robert Beveridge Tamar Myers, Custard's Last Stand (Signet, 2002)It's nice to know Ms. Myers listens to her reviews. There's a line buried in this book that sums up every review of every other Magdalena Yoder novel: "It came out as a whine, but my whining is one of my more endearing qualities, don't you think?"Thankfully, Magdalena whines a lot less in this novel (though the repeated-word thing does show up here with a few other terms), and that certainly makes the eleventh novel in the Pennsylvania Dutch (with recipes!) series all the more readable. (Note: the first was published in 1995. That's eleven novels in seven years... and all the while she's also been putting out the Den of Antiquity mysteries, of which the ninth was released in 2002. That's twenty novels in eight years. Mull that over.)This time, Magdalena is confronted with one Colonel George Custard, who plans to build a five-star hotel in Hernia, Pennsylvania, that threatens to put Magdalena out of business. All is well and good, and the townsfolk look forward to a nice big brawl, until Custard turns up dead, with a bullet hole in his head and a few cracked ribs. Magdalena, of course, is on the case.Myers' comedic timing has improved gradually over the years, and there are some unexpected whings in here that actually get the reader to the point of laughing out loud. As with most series fiction, the characters are already drawn, and there are a good number of in-jokes, but Magdalena and company are well-enough portrayed that after about fifty pages, you'll get the in-jokes as if you've been with the series all along.A worthy addition to the series. Now if only Magdalena will stop whining. *** ½

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another Amazing Murder Mystery Series By Eduard P Kusumadjaja This is the third series of this murder mystery series by author. The first one was "Minot Hacker", the second one was "Buried", and this third one is "Accused". I highly recommend these three murder mystery series, by this wonderful author, H. B. Rae. I really like the way he wrote, it's easy to read, and it's very interesting to read. This book has a lot of twists and unexpected turns, has great and well developed characters, and it's very entertaining to read. I'm hooked right from the start, and can't stop reading it because I'm very curious to find out the suspect. Overall, I'll definitely recommend this book to my friends, especially if you like this murder mystery type of books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great twists and turns! By Angela Although this is my first suspense novel by H.B Rae I have to admit that this story is enough to make me a fan. Although this is the third installment to a trilogy the author made sure that the story can still be understood for those who, like me, did not get the chance to read the first two books. The story has a lot of interesting twist and turns that would make you second guess your first instinct of who the culprit was. Towards the end of the book you will still have questions if you are right with your guess only to find out towards the end that there were some clues that you missed out on.

Accused is a mystery novel full of plot twists and unexpected turns. The characters are complex and well developed. This book is easy to read and hard to put down! I really enjoyed seeing how Tammy would solve the mystery on hand. I was caught off guard many times by the unexpected twists! Highly recommended reading.

On the plus side, it is really great for those who need larger print. And it is maddening when I can read through the whole book in less than a half hour. But I'm glad I bought it. Just don't buy the Zit books with the same year day-to-day calendar. The comics are the same.

Love the peek at a teenage boy's life since I raised three of them. I do wish they would include Hector more. The stories are believable. Sometimes the parents are hard to understand. If that boy wants to sleep late on Saturday, leave him be.

I'm pushing 80 so I was pretty young when these stories first appeared. Even after all of these years some of the stories came flooding back as I turned the pages. Without a doubt, Walt Kelly was my second most favorite artist and story teller as a child.. Carl Barks captures first place in my memories. Walt Kelly has a clean innocent style that captures your attention. The stories are definitely juvenile but quite nostalgic to this old timer. Though the stories are juvenile they are still fun for the older reader. The clean, bright, artwork is well worth the price of the book. Even youngsters of today will find this book a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

By Paul Duchin As a young child I would go to the daily news paper and read Pogo first then the Phantom and little Abner in that order.Pogo and I used sub standard English ( American if you will) so Ain,t and me and Mom not Mom and I were the norm. How endearing to use slang and contractions in the news paper. The illustrations and rip roaring humor, politics, and social commentary tickled my back bone, funny bone, and glissando my spine.I was not born when Walt wrote his Dell comics so the early drawings are a clue to his progressions. To refute Shakespeare "All people are actors" is merely his view. Walt says some are Doctors, attorneys ,let,s not kill em and, and our revered teachers is more astute. So,s Pogo and Albert and litany of critters taught me it,s a wide world, outside of the dogma dog food I was fed in school. Now here is Walt with Fairie tales I have loved, and cracks the looking glass with inimitable verve. This treasure trove warms my soul like the master story weaver Walt was born to be.To have these in print is to comb our collective psyche and etch our eyes like a painter on canvas. To see "comics" in book form affirms what I have knows since I was a Wee.Reading in all forms is the frosting of life. With such books I can smile with a inner glows. Two thumbs and big toes up ,for this jewel of humor and revealing wit.View

Review “Expansive and atmospheric, jammed with brainy, contemplative moments and dry humor…. Gaiman’s vivid, wild imagination is grounded in Williams’ and Stewart’s beautiful, captivating artwork…. Sandman fans will surely be elated not only by the return to the story but also by the stunning, gorgeous artwork, which outshines the original.”—Booklist (starred review)"Dream is a long way from his realm, but for me reading this comic feels exactly like coming home."—The Guardian"From the first page to the last, The Sandman: Overture #1 is an eruption of hallucinogenic artwork and unreal storytelling."—VICE MAGAZINE / MOTHERBOARD"Sandman: Overture may go down as one of the best-drawn chapters in Sandman's already legendary run."—Newsarama"Entering a Neil Gaiman story world is like stepping into a dream, where reality unravels and gives way to an eye-popping blend of the mythical, the fantastic, and the plain old strange. His magnum opus, of course, is a story about dreams--and despite breaking every rule in the book, it's one of the greatest graphic novels ever published."—TOR

Dream returns in Sequel, Prequel, and Simultaneous-uel By Scott Knight Neil Gaiman's Sandman has been one of my favorite stories for a long time (and Neil Gaiman one of my favorite writers), so I was excited to hear he was going to tell another tale about Dream, the Endless, and the rest of the crew. Sandman Overture is supposed to function as a sort of prequel or origin for Dream (the Sandman of the title). However, its more than that; its another piece in the long story, and not the typical origin. In the book, Dream is made aware of the fact that an aspect of him has died. He also finds out that the end of everything is near. Overture follows his quest to avert that catastrophe, which was going to occur due to a mistake he made in his past. Along the way, the reader meets up with some old favorite characters, including many of the Dream's siblings, the Endless. We also meet his parents. Woven throughout Overture are threads connecting it to the greater story told in the original Sandman series, leading right up to the event that starts that series. In fact, a reread of the series might be a good idea to see just how the events of Overture link up with the original series.I don't rightly know how to judge any Sandman story; they are the highest example of what comic books can be. The art, by J.H. Williams, is beautiful and atmospheric. Gaiman tells another wonderful story, which, like the previous Sandman books, seems to be about so much more than what it appears to be. One of the things I enjoy so much about these books is being to think about them after finishing, discovering the depth they contain. In addition to the story, the deluxe edition of Sandman Overture also contains many nice extra features. There are interviews with the various members of the creative team, highlighting their thoughts and the creative process that went in to the book. These provide a cool glimpse behind the curtain.Overall, I highly recommend Neil Gaiman's Sandman Overture. The entire series is fantastic, and this latest story is actually a good place for new readers to begin. Reading it is well worth your time.jI received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Fangirl So it's been YEARS since I've last read Sandman, but it's still one of my favorite comics of all time, and I was a little worried that this would be --well, sort of like Endless Nights, which was a good read, but not anything that I felt compelled to reread. But this surprisingly lived up to my expectations. First of all, the art is gorgeous. In particular, the coloring is absolutely stunning. The story has a ton of little nuggets and nods to the original series, plus a delightful twist that I genuinely did not see coming. And while it's a prelude, it's also continues after the end of The Wake. I know that doesn't make sense but it works, ok? Plus Daniel makes an appearance, and I love Daniel. I read this in one sitting this afternoon and already want to re-read it just to better absorb it all. I'm thinking that what I will end up doing is re reading all of Sandman, and then this again. Lovely book. Also, for this I suggest if you are on the fence about getting the physical version vs a digital copy, get the physical version. There are double spread pages in the physical copy, which has a very cool effect when opening. Plus, there's one page where the words fall like a circle, and end up upside down. Holding the physical copy, I was easily able to turn it upside down, but I think that would be harder to do with a tablet or mobile device that reorients itself.

A Fine Additional to the Sandman Series By Steven Woodcock This volume marks the long-awaited return of Neil Gaiman to his beloved Sandman series.I was quite excited to see that Gaiman had put this out as I loved his Sandman series. This was simply was one of the best, strangest, most *innovative* comic book series I ever read. I've also become a fan of most of Gaiman's books so seeing this was out was a natural.I must say I *liked* it, though not as much as I'd hoped. The story tells the tale of a mistake Sandman made long ago in not killing a star (this is normal for these books, go with it) that (because he didn't kill it) goes mad and begins the end of the universe (that kind of thing happens in these books, if you haven't read them before). Over the course of the book he discovers what he did wrong and then proceeds to see if he can fix it.....along the way he falls into a black hole, meets both his parents, and we more or less meet nearly all of the other Endless.I was surprised I didn't like the book more -- honestly I think the problem is the way the artwork and story flow. They felt a bit disjointed at times, and there are a couple of chapters that felt "included" to make the book bigger rather that substantive parts of the story arc. It DID wrap up -- kinda -- though I felt the ending was sloppier than those I remember from the Sandman comic series. The artwork however is superb and there are several "trick" pages in the book that fold out and such to give the artist a bigger canvas. It WAS a good book, but not quite as good as I'd THOUGHT it would be.Recommended for fans of the original, though it's not quite in the same 'vein' -- you could be disappointed. If you haven't read Sandman at all this is NOT the book I'd start with -- too much is assumed you already know.
