About the Author J. Michael Straczynski is an award-winning writer for film, television and comics. A former journalist for The Los Angeles Times and Time Inc., he has worked on such series as The Twilight Zone and Murder She Wrote and created Jeremiah, Crusade and Babylon 5, for which he may be best known. He penned the screenplay for Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, for which he received a British Academy Award nomination, and Ninja Assassin for the Wachowskis. His work has earned him two Hugo Awards as well as the Saturn, the Eisner, the Inkpot and the Ray Bradbury Award, among many others. His comics work includes Rising Stars and Midnight Nation for Top Cow/Image, The Amazing Spider-Man, Supreme Power, and Thor for Marvel, and he now writes both Before Watchmen: Nite Owl and Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan DC Comics.

Following on the heels of the first two volumes, the current book continues a modern reimagining of Superman outside of DC Comics direct New 52 mythology. This allows the author freedom from having to tie into anything currently happening, and creates a world where the consequences can be real and lasting, not to be undone by the latest big event.Superman has revealed himself to the world and has fought off various threats, both local to the earth and from other planets. In addition, he removed a dictator from power, but not at the behest of any government.It is this last action that has gotten the attention of the U.N., scaring many that Superman may use his power as he sees fit, not always acting in the best interests of humanity. When a mysterious visitor (Zod) with powers like Superman’s shows up at the U.N., the military and the world’s governments take him up on his offer to eliminate the potential threat Superman poses. As Zod gets help from Lex and Alexandra Luthor, Clark Kent begins to question his relationships with his friends, including Lois Lane and Lisa Lasalle (his neighbor), who may know more about him than he thinks. As the storylines pull together, Clark/Superman and the world will be left to deal with the ramifications.The Earth One series is really entertaining. Straczynski does a great job updating the story of Superman, while keep the heart of the character true and consistent. I also really enjoy the fact that it takes place outside the mainstream DC Universe, as it removes the baggage that can come with all the varying continuity. This gives Straczynski the opportunity to provide his take on classics villains, such as Zod, or to add new characters, like Lisa Lasalle. I think his take on Lex Luthor, and his wife Alexandra, is also inspired, providing a twist on the traditional Luthor role, but remaining true to the conflict between the characters.I highly recommend Superman: Earth One Vol. 3, and the series, for a new look at an old classic. This also functions as a great book for people who don’t typically read comics because of the years of history they don’t really understand.I received a preview copy of this book from DC Comics and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The Greatest Superman story I've read in a long, long, time. By John Thangaraj ...and I've been reading Superman for a long time. Since I was 7 years old in fact (I'm currently 36).And like most long time Superman fans, I've been terribly disappointed with the manner in which DC has handled The Man of Steel over the past decade or so, especially with the New 52. Sure, Superman Unchained had its moments, but it still wasn't the Superman story I've spent the past 15 or so years waiting for.This is.To be honest, the only reason I bought this comic is because I'm a collector and I have Volumes 1 (good) and 2 (average). I wasn't expecting much, though as a long time fan of Zod I certainly expected it to be much better than the mediocre Parasite storyline from Vol. 2.Which left me entirely unprepared for the story I was about to read. I'm not sure what JMS was drinking the day he wrote this, but out of nowhere, he seems to have totally nailed the essence of Superman. He isn't a goody two shoes and he isn't a Big Blue Boy Scout- he's an alien struggling to make the world a better place as best he can.Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say this- the last time I was as emotionally invested in a comic book battle between Superman and a super powered enemy, was in a little comic called Superman #75, way back in 1992.Yes, this is THAT good. The art is terrific, the pacing is crisp and the script is truly superlative (no pun intended).If you've ever loved Superman and find yourself despairing at the way he's been treated by DC over the past few years- do yourself a favour and pick this up.

By constant reader Plot: The world has turned against Superman for his role in removing General Samsa from power in Borada (see volume 2). The Luthors have been hire to find a way to kill Superman while Zod makes his way to Earth and promises to kill him himself.I thought this was better than the last two, as the villains were better and Clark's co-stars are developed more- especially his neighbor Lisa. The villains were better, although the Luthor plot was a tad predictable. The only real problem I had with it was the art. It's not bad, it's just a different style from the last one an it shows when they do flashbacks to the first volume. There also wasn't a news paper section in the end like there was with the last two. It was definately worth the near 2 1/2 year wait, although I hope it doesn't take that long for the next one.The next Earth One title- Batman: Earth One Volume 2- comes out in May, and a Wonder Woman: Earth One is due out later this year.
