By Sara Sargent It followed the source material fairly well, but the artistry and line work were along the lines the doodles I did in the margins of my mandatory English Classes in College. Not sharp, black and white, very manga-sh. Niven wove a majestic masterpiece with incredible scene description and rich characters. Sean Lam reduced it to rough line sketches and fuzzy imagery. I wish I had followed my guy instinct but the optimistic "Oh its Niven it can't be THAT bad!" I din't and it really is, that bad....Its going on my shelf because I collect Niven that's the only reason. What runs through my mind is, in the 45 years since its first publication, this drek is the best they could come up with?

However, the artwork, does not rise above adequate. A lot of potential but the details fall down -- at least to the way I've always pictured the characters. Other books have set a certain appearance for Puppeteers and Kzin and this one was just too different for me to engage in the drawings. Bottom line: worth a quick look but far from the definitive visual version of Niven's characters and story.
