By Sam Hershey I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but from the couple of sample pages it looked interesting and the artwork looked competent so I took a chance. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The book itself is massive (both a plus and a minus as it is quite durable, but a bit awkward to read due to size and weight). The story itself picks up after the events in Promethius, but doesn't touch upon the continuation of that story (i.e. don't expect sneak peek at Prometheus 2). It smacks slightly of fan-fic with a somewhat inexplicable appearance of the predators in the story line. That said, it is highly entertaining and as I mentioned, the artwork is great throughout (even with the differing styles of each artist, they all go well with their individual stories). The story definitely tries to explain more about the "black goo" and its effect on living things, as well as the engineers, but like I said, it all feels a bit fan-ficy, I doubt highly that the expansion of the ideas of Promethius are sanctioned by Scott and will likely be contradicted (or at least ignored) in the sequel to the movie which is evidently filming now, but as long as that doesn't bother you, it is still a hoot too read.I wavered between three and four stars and went with four because ultimately it is a fun read and kept my interest throughout.Slight spoiler highlights if you want to know if you want to read it (SKIP IF YOU ALREADY PLAN TO READ):1. The synthetic people (like David, Ash) can be "altered" by the black goo.2. The black goo is also used for terraforming and can produce tropical jungles in decades if left unchecked.3. The predators evidently also have a past with the Engineers (or at least consider them hunt-worthy).4. The story does connect to the colonists from the Aliens movie, minor interlude which harkens back to the movie, but somewhat tangential.

Note: A word of advice; unless you are the most diehard of alien fans, I would suggest picking up the 4 graphic novels & Omega one–shot comic. This heavy hardcover book is so ponderous, if you relax in the recliner while reading you will find this tomb quite unpleasant. This book arrived at many outlets a week ago and it’s printed on quality paper making it one very heavy SOB. As the Amazon description details it collects all 16 comics PLUS the “Omega” one–shot. It’s important to know this as the 16 comics are also available in four separate TPB’s but NOT ONE of these TPB’s contain the “Omega” 44–page finale. (There is always a gimmick). If you are not already familiar with the storyline it begins on the same distant moon LV–223 as the 2012 film with an atmospheric probe arriving three years before the events of the film. Then the narrative shifts quickly forward 129 years when a new group of company scientists, artificial constructs & security personal arrive at Zeta 2 Reticuli. The official mission is to salvage a “high value” deep space research vessel. The salvage team & heavily armed security escort head to the surface where they find a thriving alien jungle. Naturally there are hidden agendas, the mission quickly falls apart, carnage ensues, a mysterious cave is found, more information surfaces about the black liquid and there is an unexpected connection to LV–426.These events take place in just the first 4 comic chapters but it gets you started. Personally, I liked this imaginative effort to combine the separate franchises into one cohesive story. But then again it’s been three years since Prometheus hit theaters and I’m still trying to decide whether I liked that film. The content of the book [chronologically] breaks down as follows;007…Prometheus: Chapter One, Two, Three & Four107…Aliens: Chapter One, Two, Three & Four (Aliens Epilogue: “Field Report”)213…Aliens vs. Predator: Chapter One, Two, Three & Four309…Predator: Chapter One, Two, Three & Four405…Prometheus: Omega 44–Page One–Shot ConclusionBonus Content:450…Fire and Stone: Behind the Scenes – “Notes by Patric Reynolds, Juan Ferreyra, Daniel Chabon, and Scott Allie”After a two–page introduction the next 44–pages offer detailed color / black & white designs broken down into three categories: The Cast, The Monsters, The Ships And The Land.496…Unused And Abandoned Concepts508…Sequential artwork for the original story.516…Variant Covers And Cover Sketches527…Other Aliens, Predator, Alien vs. Predator Collected Volumes528…More Titles From The Creators Of The Fire And Stone Saga And Dark Horse Comics! So, now you want to know why the listing specifies…“Hardcover: 480 Pages”…I have no idea, I guess this is why we have reviews. Lyons This is the standard against which other collected editions should be compared; this edition has it all: the 4 intertwining mini-series, the oversized finale issue, and loads and loads of concept art and creators notes. The story is great. Each miniseries feels like they naturally connect to the others, and still feel like their own, unique entries. The finale is a bit underwhelming, but only because I was expecting something a little different. Regardless of the minor issues the various stories have, the event was ambitious and innovative, and made great use of the different franchises. I can't wait to see what they do next with Prometheus, AvP,Aliens, and Predator. Keep the stories coming Dark Horse!
