A most satisfying sequel for sure By honest Abe Last Stop: PARIS is a tantalizing mystery that manages to merge contemporary issues of terrorism, the economy, the Russian mafia, and revenge into an intriguing and satisfying story. The author's prior employment in Paris is clearly evidenced by his reference to Parisian landmarks, restaurants, highways, and sections of the city that provide a rich ambience. This is a stand alone novel, but it helps to read the first in the Eddie Grant saga so you get a feel for the characters and their shared history. The complex mystery and cast of characters unfolds gradually with chase scenes, kidnappings and murder in this wonderful sequel to a fascinating subject.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was delighted to find out that there was a new book coming out that continued with some of the same characters and some of the plot details. I have only been to Paris a couple of times but the details of Paris did not ring a false note.The characters were fully developed and you learned about them as the book progressed. They were believable and were fallible and made mistakes. There was no person who had all the answers. They were a functioning team who had to collect bits and pieces of information and evaluate it. I found the development of the story to be quite effective and true to life. I came to care about the lead characters who were trying to solve a series of crimes stretching back a number of years. They ring true with my knowledge of and experience with locations in Europe and the United States along with my exposure to police work as an anthropologist.I found both books to be a good read. They are stand-alone books but reading them in order gives you a fuller understanding of the story. They will be books I reread for the pleasure of the story. I strongly recommend them to you. Fully-Developed Characters and a Plot that Hops By Adam Najberg It took me a bit longer than I intended to finish John Pearce's second novel, but not because of any issues with the plot or characters (didn't have the leisure time I coveted). Au contraire. Last Stop: Paris is an excellent read. I liked The Treasure of St. Lazare, his first effort, but quibbled a bit with pace, character development and some unflagged plot twists. This time, I'm happy to say Last Stop: Paris has none of those issues. Characters are more-believable and less one-dimensional. Each character contributes to and progresses the gripping plot. Eddie is bolder and bad-assed as ever. I get the feeling that Pearce felt more comfortable in Eddie's shoes this time around. I also have to applaud Pearce for offering us believable women characters. No airheads or cardboard cutouts in Last Stop: Paris. I found myself pulling for Jen (no spoilers) and detesting Claude Khan. Making me "feel" something for characters is important, because I'm a novel skeptic after having read so many potboilers. I'm most-impressed with the author's development as a storyteller. With very few exceptions, I found the storyline believable and dialogues highly realistic. The plot really hopped, but still had enough stepbacks and moments of psychological rumination to let you breathe and absorb what you just read. I can only say I hope this was only the second book of a John Pearce trilogy. If there's a third book coming, count me in. Bravo!
