Shameless Halloran, convict stablehand, has a problem. He knows of a murder but doesn't dare tell anyone. Who can he trust? Every figure of authority in this early Australian penal settlement is a potential suspect-all have dark pasts and ruthless ambitions. So the canny Irishman enlists the help of a young doctor, newly arrived, as respectable front for his sleuthing. What follows is a tension-packed and hilarious romp as the odd couple lurch erratically towards an unlikely revelation. Bloody Colonials is a wickedly satirical piece of crime fiction set in a forbidding landscape-where big fish battle to the death in a dangerously small pond.

Lots of giggles with serious undertones By Frankie Seymour Bloody Colonials is a clever integration of whodunit, historical fiction and wall-to-wall satire. Set in a fictitious early NSW penal colony, somewhere to the vaguely tropical north of Sydney, it ruthlessly exposes the follies of the times, while retaining an essential faith that some humans are okay - subject to a few imperfections. There's a giggle on every page, but an underlying seriousness which the cruelty of the subject matter deserves. The perspective moves between an omniscient narrator (printed in Italics and reported in the present tense) which follows the doings and happenings involving various characters, and a first person narrator (written in the past tense) by a verbose, comically self-deprecating colonial doctor. The outcome is a surprise, but surprisingly satisfying.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was just what I needed to take me out of myself, to get away from the things that were troubling me. I 100% needed to escape, and this is 100% perfect escapism. Thoroughly recommended. Well worth the money; and cheaper than a foreign holiday.

Elenira An unlikely hero takes you on a rollicking ride through the complex, dangerous and at points hilarious world of an early colonial Australian settlement. With comedy, murder, romance and intrigue, this novel caters for the interests of all readers. A must read for anyone who likes anything.
