Magneto has taken his place as head of the X-Men and is leading a desperate fight against Apocalypse, a mutant who has taken over most of the Western hemisphere. Apocalypse is either recruiting or destroying all the mutants in the Americas. What regular humans are left he uses as slaves or as genetic fodder for creating more mutants. Or he just "culls" them. One mutant, Bishop, is from the normal timeline where Xavier didn't die and he is helping Magneto craft a plan to restore history. So some X-Men are seeking out a special telepath while Nightcrawler is headed to the hidden refuge Avalon (which is apparently the Antarctic Savage Land from the normal timeline). Jean Grey and Wolverine work with the European humans to make a plan to contain or defeat Apocalypse. The Europeans' solution is to nuke Manhattan (Apocalypse's headquarters). Jean wants to warn whoever's left, but can she get there in time? Can the humans' plan come off? These questions and what happened with the rest of the non-X-Men heroes are looked at in this issue. Age of Apocalypse runs for another two books, so nothing is resolved yet, but the plot is still intriguing enough to keep me reading.

I had no idea this “revenge among the student survivors of a bus crash” series only ran three volumes, making this the series conclusion. That keeps it moving quickly, though.And it’s about time. We’ve found out who the three murderers promised to us in the first volume were. Now, the mystery is “why did their counselor sow dissension among them by giving them a week to confess?” One of the students has begun wondering that himself, particularly once someone tries to kill him.The students bond a bit more with each other as they are hunted, making this volume also one of suspense, but a different type from the earlier books in the series. This is more in keeping with Yoshiki Tonogai’s previous translated works, which involve trapped kids trying to kill each other.The overall motive is typically overheated and outrageous, far outside the normal realm of behavior. These aren’t mysteries, deducible by the reader, but soap operas, presenting far-out motivations and actions for perverse entertainment. The art is competent, letting the reader know what’s happening, mostly through images of faces and bodies, but most of the storytelling comes through the characters’ dialogue. About the Author Winsor McCay (1869–1934) was a pioneer of the comic strip (Little Nemo in Slumberland) and one of the founding fathers of animation (Gertie the Dinosaur). His work is enormously influential in both fields and directly inspired Walt Disney, Chuck Jones, Federico Fellini, Art Spiegelman, Carl Barks, Maurice Sendak, and Robert Crumb, to name just a few.Ulrich Merkl is an art historian living in Germany. In 2007, he self-published The Complete Dream of the Rarebit Fiend (1904-1913), for which he collected and digitally restored hundreds of Winsor McCay’s strips, one by one. He was nominated for a Eisner award.

By Mike Fontanelli I purchased this book sight unseen, just on the strength of McCay's published work and towering reputation (not to mention that of Willis O'Brien), and am I glad I did. This one took everyone's breath away when I brought it to the office. (I work at an advertising studio amongst dozens of professional artists, and even longtime LITTLE NEMO and KING KONG admirers were blown away.) This is a stunning labor-of-love art book - ambitious in scope and beautifully illustrated. It attempts to trace and document the "Giant monster ransacking a modern Metropolis" genre in American popular culture. Author Merckl connects the dots from its earliest, turn-of-the-20th-century beginnings in newspaper comics, pulp magazine illustration and pioneer stop-motion animation, through animated cartoons and live action film, to its influence on foreign cinema, (most notably in Japan). The vast majority of the graphics here are either previously unpublished or have not been seen by the public in decades. The definitive, if not the only, book on the subject, I cannot recommend this highly enough. By all means, give this one a look.

By Jerry Edwards Mike Fontanelli's 12/8/2015 excellent review of this book doesn't leave much for me to add, but I thought I would add my special love for this book. Although I USUALLY don't care for oversized books (such as this 12" x 16" book), this is one of the few times the much larger pages were needed. I bought this book mainly for the Winsor McCay contents and mainly for the Dino strip. I LOVE the research and reconstruction that allowed the writer / editor Ulrich Merkl and the publisher FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS to share this book with Winsor McCay, dinosaur, and King Kong fans. I've been a huge fan of the high quality of FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS publishing over the years so the high quality of this book was no surprise to me, but I will definitely do a search to see what else Ulrich Merkl has wrote / edited. I'm THAT impressed by his work on this book. I AM EVEN MORE IMPRESSED by the contents of this book being almost totally new to me. I thought I had seen just about everything created by Winsor McCay, owning many collections on his work and his life. I am also very knowledgeable about early newspaper comic strips. I also thought I had seen just about every image available on dinosaurs and King Kong, being a fanatic of both for over 60 years!!! This book is a perfect combination of top-notch research information and entertaining pictures / information. This book is worth AT LEAST FIVE TIMES Amazon's price!!! I am thrilled I decided to do yet another new search on Winsor McCay on Amazon!! The DINO comic strip is worth the price of the book to me just by itself! But I'm just as thrilled with all the other information in the book. I have already read the book thoroughly, but I'm going to check every word and image in this book again right after writing this review because this book is TOO SPECIAL to miss a SINGLE IMAGE or WORD!!! I envy all of you who decide to buy this book. IT WILL QUICKLY BECOME ONE OF YOUR TOP FAVORITE BOOKS, NO MATTER HOW LARGE AND VARIED YOUR BOOK COLLECTION MIGHT BE!!! IT QUICKLY BECAME ONE OF MINE!!!

And, luckily, Boobytrap has the same clipped, resonant dialogue (a cross between Chandler and David Mamet), the understated but gripping action scenes, and the offhand noir wisdom as the rest of the series, as the always unnamed but rarely outgunned San Francisco private detective accepts a free fishing vacation in a High Sierra cabin and finds himself part of the revenge scheme of a particularly crafty mad bomber. Another superb entry in this outstanding series By A Customer If you haven't met "Nameless" yet, or encountered the work of Bill Pronzini, you are in for a rare treat. Start 'Boobytrap' and you can begin planning how to spend your reading time over the upcoming holidays--by starting from the beginning of this superb series. Pronzini's books are very well-plotted, contain complex and engaging characters, and are written in a fluid but muscular style balanced with refreshing touches of humor. Pronzini does the traditions of the detective genre proud, while still remaining very much his own man. Mystery writing doesn't get much better than this. Kick back and enjoy.

Nameless has no client and is simply looking for some rest and relaxation while his new wife, Kerry Wade, is away on business in Houston. The book's development is also unique in the series. The story is dually narrated through the notebooks of newly released felon, Donald Michael Latimer, and through Nameless himself. In addition, you know who the criminal is, what crimes have been done and which are contemplated from near the beginning. So the book becomes a study in how Nameless stumbles onto the danger and deals with it. As such, it's a fine look at detection . . . and its weaknesses. Those who have enjoyed any of the prior Nameless novels will find this offbeat entry an interesting variation on the series.If you have not yet read any Nameless novels, I strongly suggest that you read Hoodwink, Shackles, Quarry, and Illusions before this one. Although this is a standalone book, it works better in the context of Nameless's character development. Most people who read only this book will probably rate it at four stars because there isn't as much mystery as in most procedurally focused stories. The character development is quite significant though, and needs some background to appreciate.Nameless is almost 60 now and recovering emotionally from the rocky experiences in Shackles and Illusions. He's enjoying his new marriage to Kerry Wade, but she's still awfully busy with her work at the advertising agency. The two were scheduled for a romantic vacation in Baja California when Kerry has to cancel due to an opportunity to woo a new client for her firm. At odds and ends, she suggests that Nameless go fishing. No one is available to go now, but a friend hooks him up with a mutual acquaintance, San Francisco assistant D.A. Pat Dixon who arranges for Nameless to enjoy a free week at a neighbor's cabin in the high Sierras. Because Dixon is held up on a case, Nameless offers to drive Dixon's family up so they can start their vacation early.In the background, recently paroled bomber Donald Michael Latimer has decided that he wants revenge against all those who helped put him in prison . . . including the judge, the prosecutors and his ex-wife. And Pat Dixon was one of those prosecutors. The diabolical nature of Latimer's desire for revenge is one of the main attractions of this story. Echoes of the Unabomber will float through your head as you read this taut story.Fans of the Nameless mystique will be fascinated by his reaction to the fishing opportunity and his past actions (especially in Quarry). You also get a brief peek at the first name that shows up every so often in these novels that refers to Nameless.Mr. Pronzini's fans will chuckle over the dedication to this book: "For Sharon McCone, Who promises to keep me in the manner to which I'd like to become accustomed." If you didn't realize it, Mr. Pronzini's wife is Marcia Muller, Sharon McCone's creator.As I finished the novel, I found myself thinking about when killing is ever justified . . . and how effective punishment really is. I suspect that I will be haunted by this story for months to come.

Pronzini's writing is clear, and he knows how to keep the reader on the edge of his seat. If you read this one you will soon want to read all his other "Nameless Detective" novels.

An interesting tale By Tartarus The third volume of the Tomb Raider comics set between the two latest games is, in my opinion, the best out of the three volumes.In this story arc Lara and her friends receive a video that seems to show someone they thought dead is still alive and kidnapped by a criminal group (but things are not quite as they seem though).This story is set shortly before Rise of the Tomb Raider and ties in fairly well with it. You learn the reason why Sam is absent by then and you see the beginnings of Lara's true investigations into her father's old research which becomes very plot important in the game.The antagonists in this volume are the best so far out of the three volumes. They make more sense than the antagonists of Volume 1 and their motivations are more clear than the antagonists of Volume 2.It is also interesting to see the new things Lara learns about her father in this volume.A pretty interesting read.
