For any readers new to the series , Astro City is a longing running series set in the same universe. Astro City started in 1995 and this is the twelfth collection. Since it is a shared Universe you can really start anywhere .The series grew out of Kurt Busiek's Marvels. The idea of very gritty real heroes existing in our world. His Marvels partner Alex Ross paints all the beautiful covers. They are all included here. While Brent Anderson handles the gorgeous interior art work. All three of these talents have not lost a step. This volume collects two recent stories from the most recent series. A four part story focusing on Quarrel and her crime fighting partner Crackerjack. And a two part story about Sticks the Super Strong Talking Ape.The Quarrel story is a touching story about Retirement. Quarrel is a late middle aged Super Heroine with no natural enhanced ability. She had spent a lifetime trying to redeem herself for her father's criminal past. She has pushed herself hard and not allowed for much happiness. Now what will she do when Time has taken it's toll.Having myself just recently retired , I found the themes presented here to be timeless and poignant. In the smaller story we meet Sticks, a talking ape who just came to Astro City to play the drums. Unfortunately both the Super-heroes and the Super-villains have other plans for him. He dabbles in crime fighting but misses his drum kit.I have been long hoping for an Omnibus series of Astro City stories but given up hope and decided to enjoy what we have. So start here or anywhere and enjoy this masterful creation. It is still excellent and doesn't get near the accolades it should.Highly Recommended.

Idol Dreams, Vol. 1, by Arina Tanemura

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Life hasn't turned out so well for 31-year-old Chikage. In her mind, she's a hard worker but plain and unaccomplished. Like many, she wishes for a second chance at life—then she actually gets it. When an old friend offers her an experimental drug that restores youth, she doesn't hesitate to accept. Adventure crashes into her headfirst, and so begins her unexpected yet exciting idol debut. Sadly, with so much happening, she fails to recognize what is right in front of her. Tanemura's art is as beautiful as ever, with sparkly eyed protagonists, and full of emotional scenes. Fans of her work will appreciate how she tries to deviate from her stock character designs. Chikage's low self-esteem will resonate with teens, but her struggles to live up to the status of an "accomplished" woman make her an unsympathetic character. However, the courage she finds to face her fears and her desire to become a "her" that she can love are admirable. By the end of this volume, readers will be cheering her on. While the style, idol premise, and focus on young love will largely appeal to teens, adults, too, will find this tale enjoyable. VERDICT A promising mixture of romance, fun, and contemplation.—Rachel Forbes, formerly of Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

By Leaf I must have hit the jackpot with manga this year. Every shojo release I get turns out to be a good read! Now let me start by saying I'm not a huge fan of Arina Tanemura. She's good but I never felt the love for her work so many do. The art is too sparkly and the eyes are too big for my tastes. The number one reason though, is that all her characters look the same.I'm not hating-just voicing my opinion. So, to remedy these unpopular opinions I'll tell you why I really liked Idol Dreams.Chikage Deguchi has lived her life only to realize she hasn't lived?. She's 31 and has never had a boyfriend, never felt truly appreciated, and works her butt off only to be harassed at her job. Once, she was pretty. Once she was a model student and all the boys confessed to her...but only after graduation.Chikage is so broken that when she is publicly humiliated at her high school reunion, she tries to kill herself. Guys remember: she's depressed. It's not stupid or unrealistic. Her emotions were clear and Japanese standards put emphasis on societal standing and etc so unless you know that, you might think she's overreacting. She isn't.Tokita, a young man who was a classmate of Chikage's, offers her the chance to start over. We don't know much more about him other than that he's always liked Chikage while she only had eyes for Haru. Haru was the boy who confessed to her after graduation and she wanted nothing more than to rekindle that flame at the reunion. Only now she realizes it's impossible.Tokita lets her take a pill that lets Chikage transform back into a younger version of herself for about 6 hours. It isn't permanent like the premise makes it seem. She is instantly taken into the agency where Hibiki, a popular idol from the group Valentine, works at. He looks exactly like Haru too, and Chikage is very confused about this.So we have two plots going on. Chikage is reliving her life and trying to find another path as an idol. And she's also still a 31 year old office worker being harassed by her coworkers. The thing that makes this work so well is it makes you think about the reprecussions. It makes you see the world in a different way.Chikage realizes that she's not the only suffering. Hibiki hates how he's constantly labeled as a prodigy for he works very hard to do what he does. The women are pressured to be beautiful and to be meek to attract men. And how superficial our lives can be."My career, everything...I've worked so hard...so why is it always the carefree, irresponsible girls who find happiness?!"Which makes it hard to read at times. Chikage wants to redo her life because...she's never had a boyfriend. I mean, yeah, that's a reason but is that worth it? She nearly killed herself. She's a very damaged character and I'm worried that this will tell people that love is the epitome of life. It isn't. It's a part that can make us happy, but it isn't everything there is to life. And Chikage needs to develop into a strong, independent woman and realize this. This is only the first volume and while it does have troubling themes, I'm willing to support this series to see where this goes. Will Chikage turn out to be a desperate cougar and chase after a 15 year old idol pop star? Or will she better herselef and realize you can change yourself. That it's never too late. And that while love is important, it isn't all there is.Chikage seems a little too bland and dug a hole for herself, so I want to see if she jumps in it, or if she covers it up. Let's hope it improves.

Recognizing that her longstanding fans have grown up and become adults, she has written a series for them. Published in a tankouban targeted to women rather than girls, the same magic is here, of course, but the protagonist is now a 31 year old office worker who realizes her life has someone stagnated. It's a great idea for a story - a gift to her older readers while she also works on her other titles geared to a younger audience.Story: Chicage Deguchi had a charmed life in high school - popular, smart, and full of potential. But now, over a decade later, she's a 'Christmas cake' - an office worker who has somehow reached her 30s without ever finding a husband or fulfilling life. When younger and prettier coworkers denigrate her status and betray her for their own benefit, she's had enough and decides to take her life. She's saved by an old friend from school, now a scientist, who believes he can give her a reason to live. He's experimenting with a drug that can turn her body back to 15 temporarily. It's dangerous but she doesn't care; it's her chance to relive her best years and this time make the right decisions.Because it is Tanemura, we'll have a lively 15 year old protagonist becoming embroiled in the idol world. Cue cute boys and plenty of idol action. Perhaps where this book will differ is that her true love interest is actually in her 31 year old present - the friend she protected but never saw again after school until he saves her from drowning.

I found 31 year old Chikage Deguchi ( A nice breath of fresh air to read about manga protagonist who isn't in their teens or early 20s) a very relate-able and sympathetic heroine. The other characters and their relation to the protagonist that appear so far are already clearly set up and have grabbed my interest. This title kind of reminds me of a couple of Arina Tanemura's works; specifically I.O.N and Full Moon, but is very clearly its own title. Outside of this miracle drug that makes Deguchi younger and the minor contrivance of her becoming an idol I can't find anything to really complain about. In fact, the pacing and handling of the plot in general allowed me to suspend my disbelief and enjoy myself. Lastly, Arina's artwork is as lovely as always. I think Deguchi's awkward facial expressions (such as her smile attempt) as an idol are especially well done.If you're looking for a new series to start I recommend this one here. I was hooked from beginning to end. I just hate that I'm going to have to wait until next year for volume 2.

Basically, it's about match between Izuku and Katsuki, Iida becoming class president, and the introduction of villains. Every chapter gets really exciting and it always keeps me hanging of what happens next. Right now, Japan has 70 chapters, and the anime is going to come out in 2016. Can't wait for it! ^-^

Superhero manga is pretty much like ninja manga with costumes and "My Hero Academia" adds in the school environment for a ton of action-packed fun. This did start off a little iffy for me but once the first training class was well underway I got hooked and the story had so much happening I found myself with a page-turner. For an extreme battle packed manga, it has a lot of character development and a pretty dedicated plot. Who the characters are as people is more important than their superhero identities and I really liked the way they were often drawn with half the face masked or a silhouette of the unmasked face behind the superhero. I'm really liking all of the characters at this point both the staff and students. Once again the plot builds up to quite an intense ending leaving me excited to read the next volume. Fans of Tiger & Bunny should like this too.

Buried Threads (Volume 2), by Kaylin McFarren

Review

  • "If you're a fan of murder mysteries but eschew the usual genre-formatted adventures that offer too-predictable protagonists and not enough depth, it's time to take a look at Buried Threads: a horse of another color. More than a murder mystery, this mingles a treasure hunt, an international race against time, a dark prophecy, Japanese culture, erotic encounters and a clever killer's modus operandi into a story that just won't quit." --Diane Donovan, Senior Editor, Midwest Book Review
  • "Turning each page in this book, it's hard not to imagine the glossy, high-budget film that is begging to be made. The setting of modern Japan is exotic and jumps off the page whether in the form of the demure geishas or the twisted honor of the yakuza. Almost immediately, readers are treated to action and double-crosses in the seedy underbelly of the land of the rising sun. With plenty of all the elements welcome to expect from an action blockbuster, this title is satisfying and entertaining from start to finish." --Michael Radon, US Review of Books
  • "The second book in the Threads series does not disappoint! This time it's set in Japan, and McFarren has clearly done her research when it comes to Japanese history. The setting and the characters are brought to life with her deft hand. Buried Threads is a true page-turner, and the reader will be counting the days till the next book in this series is released." --Susan Roberts, RT Review Source

From the Author Although Buried Threads is the second book in my Threads series, it truly stands alone. For many years, I've been able to travel to Japan and have enjoyed meeting and developing relationships with geikos and maikos within the walls of Gion's hidden world. Although I've taken these experiences for granted, I've recently come to realize what an amazing life I've lead and how these remarkable interactions have opened my eyes and enriched my life. Keeping this in mind, it is my hope that you will be entertained and educated through the telling of this story in the same way as I have been by the "gifted" individuals I've come to know and love.

From the Inside Flap I like to describe my books as thrillers or romantic adventures, but they also revolve around family drama. This is by no means an accident. We all have families--good ones, bad ones, absent ones, indifferent ones--and sometimes members we never knew existed. However, for the purpose of my stories, it really doesn't matter. The connection is easy enough to make, and readers will relate despite inherent complexities. You see, I've learned how to turn my family dysfunction into an interesting garden. If you dig deep, you can find the richest literary soil. It is the place where I sow seeds of distrust, cultivate secrets and misdeeds, and grow vines of tension, twisting and turning in all directions. The thorns of betrayal cut more deeply, pain lingers longer, and the senses are left reeling from the poison of deceit. For an author, this is the gift of writing. This is what I hope to achieve. So let me once again thank my remarkable family for their patience and understanding. My parents had hopes and dreams for their future together and in their own way provided the encouragement that led me to pursue mine. The children I've been blessed with will forever remain my most prideful accomplishments and have grown to become my true and dearest friends. Yet there is one person who has opened my life to endless possibilities and who has taught me to follow my heart...wherever it leads. This is, of course, my darling husband Junki--to whom this book is dedicated. Thank you for loving me, for your tasty late night suppers, shared bottles of wine, and for allowing me to drift away from time to time to dangerous, exotic places.

Fast-paced, fascinating characters, cross-genre plot elements, & Japanese sub-subcultures, in this winning erotica thriller By Chanticleer Book Reviews From the alluring book cover depicting a Japanese woman holding a beautiful sword, to the twisty, explosive ending, Kaylin McFarren’s second novel in the "Threads" series,"Buried Threads," takes you on an wild ride that will having you reading long into the night.Treasure hunters Rachel Lyons and Chase Cohen, first introduced in "Severed Threads," return in this novel, racing against time and overwhelming odds to recover a long-lost Japanese treasure. The Buddhist monk Satoru Yamada, or Shinzo, has hired them to locate a valuable Templar stone embedded in the scabbard of a sword at the bottom of the ocean. The sword is one of three, robbed from the tomb of a prince. Rachel’s employer believes that its return will save the soul of the woman who originally robbed the tomb, and also prevent a catastrophic natural disaster that could kill millions.Fearlessly combining the influence of Japanese Manga with elements of romance, suspense, paranormal, and action-adventure, McFarren provides a fast-paced, scary, yet addictive reading experience. The author doesn’t mind bending the rules of craft or genre to present a complex, multi-layered story about fascinating characters—the beautiful yet numb geisha, the obsessed, vengeful Yakuza killer, the Buddhist monk who claims to see into both the future and the past, and of course, the intelligent and talented heroine, troubled by personal insecurities yet strong enough to expertly brandish a sword. As McFarren introduces you to each of these people against the backdrop of modern and ancient Japanese culture, you become hooked, soon kept in thrall of their unfolding stories and fearful of who will still be alive at the end. "Buried Threads" interweaves cross-genre these plot elements in a tale that nevertheless accurately depicts Japanese subcultures. McFarren obviously has done her research on this exotic setting, enriching each page with details of Japanese urban nightlife, modern feminist attitudes, as well as the mindset of a centuries-old warrior culture. Readers who love to learn about foreign locales will enjoy this aspect of the book.Because the author takes you so deeply inside the minds of multiple characters that are central to the plot, the back-and-forth among their points of view can at first be distracting. Typically, this would make it harder to connect with the characters. But McFarren draws intricate pictures of multi-faceted people, revealing their strengths as well as their fears and anxieties, so that you feel you know them instantly. The plot complications come fast and furiously, and you meet the large cast of characters quickly enough that you must pay close attention. This reviewer’s advice, though, is to be patient. Before you realize it, you’ll be well and truly immersed in this complex, edge-of-the-seat thriller."Buried Threads" was awarded a CLUE Award for Steamy/Action Thriller, a division of the Chanticleer Reviews Internationals Novel Writing Competitions.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. eroticism, adventure and the average woman's thought process By Book Review "Buried Threads," Kaylin McFarren's second volume in her Threads Series, is written in that rather strange soft-core porn genre wherein East meets West in the romantic suspense novel. As long as you know where you are going, I think you'll enjoy the trip.In the introduction to her first Threads novel, McFarren wrote that she wanted to "impact on other lives…to produce insight into broken relationships and damaged emotions," to provide a "view of the average woman's thought process," and without question her heroines are treated with respect by the author, if not by the plot line. Rachel Lyons is once again beset by doubts about her lover, Chase Cohen, and disturbing memories of her father. The Japanese women in the story are hounded by their own devils. It is often hard to know exactly whose side they are on—especially when some spirit or other takes them over—but hang on and it will come clear—more or less. The "average woman" obviously has a more complicated thought process than the average woman reader might have thought."Buried Threads" obviously owes a lot to shojo manga, the female-focused form of Japanese manga, featuring young women as reborn defenders of the planet with remarkable fighting skills. And once you realize that such literature gets its vitality from its episodic nature, the multiple plot lines stop being annoying and you look forward to "what next?".McFarren knows a great deal about Japanese culture and history and she has absorbed it to the point of letting it just flow—no lectures, no show-offy "bet you didn't know." Whereas the eroticism in another setting might seem extremely offensive as it does little to propel the story, here it appears to be a "Japanese thing"; poor Rachel seems to go for days without a good night's rest, let alone any love making. If you're not into gratuitous sex, skip Chapter 9. If you like lots and lots of suspense, adventure and romance in foreign places with more to come, bookreaview.com thinks you'll really enjoy Kaylin McFarren's Thread Series.

By Amazon Customer The author Kaylin McFarren is able to capture the hearts of the readers’ once again with Buried Threads, a thrilling suspenseful action packed adventure novel that will keep you on the edge. The main characters in the first book of this series “Severed Threads”, Rachel Lyon and Chase Cohen will once again go on a treasure hunt to retrieve the Templar Stone known as the Heart of darkness from an ancient underground tomb. The story will take you on a wild ride and will make you want to live every moment of the story inside your mind. This action packed novel comes is bound with romance and erotic scenes. This is a good book that is a mixture of everything that you will want in a novel. Buried threads is a book buried with a story that itself is a treasure to a true passionate reader. The story contains authentic entertainment that makes the plot flow flawlessly connecting all dots in the story line. The story takes place in Japan and you will find the duo will have to battle through many obstacles including the Japanese mob.On the other hand, few of the scenes in the story was a bit confusing making me wonder what happened there as it doesn’t go into a detailed description. Sometimes it was felt that the erotic scenes were a bit distracting, but that can be justified in the way the author wants to blend action and love in the story.Treasure hunt stories will always have that special spark that makes you wonder what will happen next and the sudden unexpected thrills that come along with it. This book has kept its standards up to that expectation making this a wonderful novel to read. So if you are a fan of thriller adventure rides blended with love and passion, then this is the book to read. I am rating this book 4 out of 5 points. Thanks.
