A Chief Inspector Pointer Mystery! Chief Inspector Pointer finds himself looking into the suspected suicide of the owner of a chain of high-end hair dressing salons. The only thing suspicious about the death is a tenuous link to the earlier brutal murder of a woman at a cottage called The Clearing in Lincolnshire. The clues in that case are sparse, and while there are suspects, none would seem to have a motive strong enough to fit the nature of the crime, and none of them had any connection the subject of his own investigation. The inspector, however, becomes convinced that there is a connection, and that to solve his own case, he must first solve the earlier murder.

Pointer to a Crime: A Chief Inspector Pointer Mystery, by A. E. Fielding

About the Author The identity of the author is as much a mystery as the plots of the novels. Two dozen novels were published from 1924 to 1944 as by Archibald Fielding, A. E. Fielding, or Archibald E. Fielding, yet the only clue as to the real author is a comment by the American publishers, H.C. Kinsey Co. that A. E. Fielding was in reality a “middle-aged English woman by the name of Dorothy Feilding whose peacetime address is Sheffield Terrace, Kensington, London, and who enjoys gardening.” Research on the part of John Herrington has uncovered a person by that name living at 2 Sheffield Terrace from 1932-1936. She appears to have moved to Islington in 1937 after which she disappears. To complicate things, some have attributed the authorship to Lady Dorothy Mary Evelyn Moore nee Feilding (1889-1935), however, a grandson of Lady Dorothy denied any family knowledge of such authorship. The archivist at Collins, the British publisher, reports that any records of A. Fielding were presumably lost during WWII. Birthdates have been given variously as 1884, 1889, and 1900. Unless new information comes to light, it would appear that the real authorship must remain a mystery.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The Four Faces of Moon Knight By Stephen Vincent Kempton Last year's first Epic Collection of Moon Knight was a surprise hit for the Epic line. So now one year later we get a direct sequel. This collection is again over 500 pages but this time it is all from a two year period 1981 and 1982 when Moon Knight got his own monthly comic. Collected are Moon Knight #5 through #23 plus the back up stories and related text pieces contained in those issues. The reproduction is equally as good as the first volume and you get a heavy card stock cover once again. My one complaint about the format is I think the re-coloring done for the cover is too dark and obscures the art. This volume is largely a success because of the skills of two men who do over 90% of this volume. Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz.Doug Moench is Moon Knight's co-creator who brought him to life in Werewolf by Night #32 as a foe for the Werewolf. While some of his early 1970's writing was a little pretentious and over written by the time Moon Knight got his own book he was really at the top of his game doing some excellent work. His storylines are very diverse and non-repetitive.Young Bill Sienkiewicz was actually brought to Marvel by his mentor Neal Adams who recommended him to the Editor Archie Goodwin. Sienkiewicz worked on the Moon Knight backups in the Rampaging Hulk Magazine. They served as just the right forum to get him noticed. He quickly emerged as a fan favorite artist.Sienkiewicz inks about half of his stories and they are beautiful and my preference. Frank Giacoia inks one issue and is a poor fit destroying the intricate line work. Steve Mitchell is very good and Klaus Janson is excellent.Moon Knight for those unfamiliar with the character had four separate and distinct personalities. Marc Spector the Mercenary who started it all. Marc Spector gets his own back up stories in this volume. They read like a cross between paperback novels featuring the Destroyer and Indiana Jones.Steven Grant the suave, rich Playboy from the Bruce Wayne mold. Jake Lockely the gritty Taxi Driver and Moon Knight himself. The personalities are so different it is a borderline personality disorder.Moench develops an excellent supporting cast also. Marlene Alraune is his girl Friday who keeps it all together. Jean-Paul DuChamp called "Frenchy" is a skilled Helicopter Pilot. Plus the civilian friends of Jake Lockely like Betrand Crowley . Crowley is a highly intelligent homeless man. Gena Landers is greasy spoon waitress who also aides on occasion with or without her sons. With issue #15 the comic became a Direct Sales only comic. These comics where not sold in other sources then comic book shops and were not returnable. Moon Knight was a very successful Direct Sales Comic. This meant generally several things. First stories aimed for an older adult audience. While Moench's Moon Knight stories seemed aimed at adults since the Black and White magazines, now he no longer had the Comics Code to contend with. The price was increased from 50 cents to 75 cents and the kid aimed advertising disappeared. That meant the story pages went from 22 pages an issue to 28 pages. Moon Knight #20 and #23 featured extra long stories but the other seven issues included here either had text back up features or related back up stories. This book is actually even better then the first volume and comes highly recommended.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The character's best period of storytelling collected at last! By Brian Reaves This collection is from the time when Moon Knight was a seriously good character before Marvel decided they had no idea how to write his stories. He faces supernatural foes, along with the common thug or two. There are guest appearances from other heroes like Daredevil and the stories are covered well. If you own "Essential Moon Knight Volume 1" you won't have any reason to buy this other than seeing the stories in color. But I prefer color so I'm willing to spend the extra money to see the stories as they first came out. I hope Marvel continues to give us Moon Knight Epic Collections as the character warrants them. He had such potential (as you will see here) and it's a shame Marvel can't bring him back to this level or storytelling.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. I'm really happy that it's been published in English By L.L. A few months ago, I wanted to purchase this book, but it was only available in Japanese. I'm really happy that it's been published in English, because this is the only series I enjoyed to the point of actually wanting to buy the book (mostly because of the comedy and likable characters make for high amounts of re-reading.) I don't like how there are comics printed behind the front and back cover instead of having their own pages, which makes the book feel cheaper. Overall, I'm happy with it.

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorites By Sarie I adore this series and was so happy to see that it had been picked up that I pre-ordered it to make sure I got it right away.Chiyo Sakura is head over heels in love with one of boys in her school. After finally getting the nerve to confess her feelings to him, he misinterprets her confession for admitting that she's a fan of his and hands her a signed autograph instead. Confused, she tries to correct the misunderstanding--only to be misunderstood again. Soon she finds herself back at his house doing beta work on his art--and discovering her crush is nothing like what she thought. Nozaki is a mangaka--and not just any sort of mangaka--a shoujo mangaka. Meaning, this oblivious and clueless boy draws romance manga for a living.Chiyo is quickly drawn into his world as his assistant, all while still trying to express her (extremely devoted) feelings to someone who just doesn't quite get it. Slowly the cast of characters grows, setting up one of the most amusing casts to the point that picking a favorite is almost impossible to do. This is a 4-komi style manga, which is more similar to the American Sunday Comic then the typical Japanese manga storyline. But it really works for this series. It is a comedy through and through and I can't wait for volume 2.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Concept for a Manga By P. Romance Oh my stars. This manga was so clever. It is set up like a series of side panels. If you are not familiar with this concept . . . Normally, in mangas, there are side panels that the mangaka usually add to convey some thoughts about their life or how they researched for the manga. Or they can add these extras at the end of the manga to have some fun with the characters. These are so fun to read. Like in this manga, there are usually 4 panels. The first panel is serious and sets the plot. Then the last panel is the punch line. It’s brilliant. So, just imagine a series of consecutive panels that have a plot and you have this manga. The characters are so funny and with a wide array of personalities. The artwork is nicely drawn. The hero is my favorite. Nozaki is hilarious. He is so clueless, you just love him. Sakura is good heroine. She became more of a supporting character to carry the joke. The side characters are just as cool. My only concern would be that the plot does get lost. So, I’ll interested in seeing how relationships developed. Other than that, this manga is awesome! It made me smile throughout. Even a few chuckles escaped. There isn’t a lot of romance. A quick read. I highly recommend.

One word: AWESOME By Mark Mavrantonis I read this book in one sitting, and I have to say it's one of the better books I've read in a very long tiime. I generally read between four and six works of fiction every week, and for me to say this is one of my favorites is really saying a lot.The story begins with an abandoned baby - found in a dumpster - being taken in by very kind foster parents. As the infant grows, it becomes very clear that he's a bit "different." The parents take him to a doctor when he's four, and from there, it becomes obvious that the boy's IQ is off the charts, about three hundred points off the charts when compard to some of the smartest people in history. The parents are reluctantly convinced to allow Bobby to be taken into a special program to develop his incredible intelligence. From here, it gets really good - the kid has a great personality, somewhat sarcastic, but very kind overall. There's an obvious difference about him, and he tends to be alone most of the time, ever studying, or in one of his "trances," where he just stares off into the distance for long periods of time, working things out in his head. The company funding the program has an ulterior motive to focus Bobby on math and science, in particular to solve problems for military programs. After several tragedies occur in Bobby's life, before he's even twenty years old, he decides to devote all of his focus to the medical field, to cure diseases and to help mankind doing medical research. Needless to say, this isn't ideal for the group who is running the program and they're not thrilled with Bobby's decision.I'm not going to give away any more, but all I can say is at you need to read the book. The author seems to have done some excellent research, and everything seems very plausible given the unusual circumstances.I don't know a lot about the process of writing a novel, but one thing that stuck out for me was that the editing job was impeccable. I tend to find a lot of grammatical and typographical errors in most eBooks I read, but this one had almost none. The "flow" of the timeline was seamless as well - a week or two here and there, sometimes it would skip a course of several years, but it was all tied together perfectly. At the end of the book, it seemed to me that there could quite possibly be a very exciting sequel, maybe even the possibility of a series. I hope there is at least one more in the works - I'll read it nonstop when it comes out.Buy this book - you will definitely not be disappointed.

I felt compelled to write it since I have been a little frustrated lately with the efforts of the big name fiction writers you all know and I am quite excited by the idea of a new favortie author to follow for a while. I recently stumbled upon "Miracle Man" by William R. Leibowitz. In short - great main character, great story line, very enjoyable writing style that makes the book flow quickly, believable plot, etc. - All the things you hope for in a great book.Miracle Man appears to be the author's first effort - and I certainly hope it is not his last. I loved everything about this book! The author does a really great job of developing the story and all the characters involved. The main character (Robert James Austin) is a super genius using his powers for the forces of good in the world who has to deal with some powerful forces conspiring against him (internal and external) - morality(in the non-religious sense), human nature (good and bad), corporate ethics (mostly bad) - these are all covered within a very smartly written storyline surrounding a truly great character. The author almost has me believing that he is some form of genius himself... I look forward to Mr. Leibowitz's next offering. As someone who has been trying to do the right thing in the ethically and morally challenged world of finance for my career, I personally feel like I can relate completely to the "Miracle Man" (minus the genius intellect i suppose).I have placed "Miracle Man" on the very short list of books that I consider to be really great fiction. Add it to your reading list immediately and you will not regret it. I recommend it highly!

Even at an early age, he had shown a remarkable ability to learn and create. Indeed, when most boys were just learning the alphabet, Bobby was studying human anatomy and astronomy. There was a dark side to this brilliance, though, and that is why his parents sought help from the doctors, the ones whom they hoped would help their young boy. Sitting patiently through their tests, Bobby revealed an intelligence never before seen in another human; his aptitude for learning and imaginative thought was greater than that of even Einstein. In order to nurture his intellectual growth, the doctors offered special educational opportunities for the boy, the boy who would bring about miracles in his later years. As a young adult he quickly surpassed his teachers in his understanding of even the most advanced math and sciences. A governmental agency considered him a human resource for future scientific development, but Robert would have other ideas. After the loss of his parents, he formed a relationship with Dr. Manzini, who would become his mentor and surrogate father. It was Manzini who urged Robert to find his own path, no matter the consequences. Leaving the protection of the government and his school, he decided to devote his life to curing even the most deadly diseases. Even as he solved the problem of certain illnesses, though, he gained new enemies and suffered from the darkness growing within him.Isolated and threatened, Robert delved deeper into his research, becoming more and more self destructive even as he solved the most difficult scientific dilemmas. His devotion to his work came at a personal price, both for him and his wife. Robert—unwanted by his biological parents and now hunted by multiple enemies—soon became convinced of a greater force opposing him, one that he little understood and yet was determined to fight. The symptoms that so concerned his parents became more acute throughout this struggle, one that could possibly end in his own destruction. In Miracle Man, William R. Leibowitz presents the story of a modern day superman, one who possesses an extraordinary intelligence. As much as the story tells of the miracles that he leaves in his wake, it is more the tale of the importance of each life. As a baby, Robert had been rejected by his biological parents and many potential foster parents; the boy who was scorned and unwanted by all would become a blessing to so many. Reading the story of Robert, one wonders if the world has suffered in its lack of caring for such unwanted children.Although the story could have become an obvious morality tale, it instead is also one that explores the great depths of darkness that can be brought with such gifts. This analysis of Robert's constant isolation and suffering also brings with it an intriguing spiritual element, one that is unique in such stories. His awesome intellect—a genetic anomaly—may have a greater purpose than scientific research; indeed, it seems that this aberration might have been brought about for a greater purpose, that of opposing a universal evil. Whether this is simply part of Robert's own mental instability or true spiritual warfare, it adds an urgency to the novel that is not found in other similar stories.Miracle Man, the story of a man of great intelligence and vision, will appeal to those readers desiring a thoughtful story that probes the potential of one man. Well-researched and plausible, it is a novel that will certainly delight in its exploration of universal themes and the darkness that threatens to destroy from within. The educated reader will enjoy this novel with its heavy emphasis on science, and yet those who are religious will also find great insight in its spiritual themes. William R. Leibowitz, in his writing of Miracle Man, has provided the bookish individual with a perfectly wonderful read.Krista Schnee for Pacific Book Review
