Prince Valiant In Search Of The Holy Grail By Stephen Vincent Kempton It has been almost six months since Fantagraphics has brought us another volume of Prince Valiant in this jumbo Deluxe Hard Cover Collection. Two more years are collected in this volume. The years of 1959 and 1960 are collected this time . The beautifully restored art is on one giant page per Sunday strip. Even if you bought the first soft covers from Fantagraphics , you will want to rebuy these even better reproduced format.Master Comic Illustrator Neal Adams does the introduction this time talking about his boyhood introduction to Prince Valiant. Comic Historian Brian M. Kane provides an excellent 11 page article on Hal Foster's advertising art that he did for Johnson Outboard Motors with a lot of illustrations.Unlike last volume which featured a couple of solo tales for Prince Arn, Foster chooses to make Prince Valiant the focal character in this entire volume. Arn does reappear briefly towards the end of the collection. When last we left our Heroes , Prince Valiant was masquerading as a Minstrel and Sir Gawain was imprisoned in King Oswick's dungeon. Valiant spends the first three months in a clever plot to free Gawain. Then the duo take a leisurely route back to Camelot getting themselves involved in a couple smaller adventures. When Prince Valiant finally reaches Camelot he decides to have a few ales with the boys before he comes staggering back to his Queen Aleta. All this leads to an almost one year rift between the lovers as Prince Valiant ends up taking the Queen over his knee and spanking her. This ends up with Prince Valiant needing an excuse to leave Camelot for awhile. He chooses to seek knowledge about the Holy Grail. King Arthur has been losing many Knights to this Quest. Is there any validity to the existence of the Holy Grail.Prince Valiant's Quest takes him to Stonehenge and he has several other adventures including a confrontation with an Ogre. When Prince Valiant does return to Camelot he has no proof for King Arthur that the religious chalice is real.Queen Aleta gives Valiant such a frosty welcome that he immediately leaves again for battle. Prince Valiant with reckless abandonment leaps into the war with the Saxons until he is gravely wounded. King Arthur wisely orders Queen Aleta to his side and she restores his will to live. After they reconcile Valiant , Aleta , the returning Prince Arn and even the twin girls all journey to the Misty Isles. Queen Aleta's kingdom has need of her. The volume concludes on a cliff hanger as Prince Valiant is defending the Misty Isles from an attack from a neighboring kingdom. This beautiful volume is worth having on every collectors shelf for frequent re-visits.My Highest Recommendation.

A feast to the eyes and mind.I saw this comic strip since I was a child and fromthen I was fascinated by the drawings.I always wanted to draw like that. But neverunderstood the captions. Really they are notfor a child to read. It was until many many yearslater that I understood the story. This are really stories for you to read to your kids.Although not necessarily with the same words butwith words your kids can understand. It is unique in the world.

The two years of Sunday pages in this volume open with Val trying to rescue Gawain from a king holding him for ransom and ends with Val tracking down a king who had tried to conquer the Misty Isles and failing that, murder Aleta. In between there is a generous amount of violence, humor, romance, and other slices of medieval life. The primary character growth comes when Val's son Arn must cope with the first time he kills a man in battle. As always, Foster's artwork is superb, his plotting well paced and exciting, and his characters, despite the lack of growth in this volume, are either likable or despicable as Foster can make them. Foster never bothered with the anti-heroic type that was beginning its rise as the strips in this volume first appeared. The closest he comes is with Val's friend, the marauder Boltar, who, when not helping Val is sacking towns. The extras are not quite as generous as in previous volumes. We get no new biographical information on Foster. We do get a one page foreword by Neil Adams and some nice sample of Foster advertising art for Johnson outboards at the rear. All the volumes in this series are highly recommended. I hope these books continue past the previous softbound Fantagraphics series but that goal is years away.

This was a very well done graphic novel. I really enjoyed the artwork and enjoyed how the story is broadened.Hiro Shishigami has revealed to his friend Ando that he has strange biomechanical powers of his own, similar to Inuyashiki. However, Hiro proves that while power can be used for good (which is the direction Inuyashiki is exploring) it can also be used for evil. Hiro starts embarking down a dark path with his new powers. As Hiro’s kill count rises it looks like Inuyashiki may be the only one who can stop him.I enjoyed this volume of Inuyashiki a lot, but not quite as much as the first volume. This volume is full of very graphic and gory violence (brutal murder of a family...including kids and baby) and also has a sex scene with partial nudity. It’s rated Older Teen, but I am thinking it’s probably more appropriate for adult readers. Here we get an indepth look into Hiro’s activities...and Hiro is one sick cookie. You also get a bit hint as to where the story is going….it looks like Hiro is going to be the super evil bad dude and Inuyashiki is going to be the unlikely savior. I am hoping the story is more complex and interesting than that in the long run...I would really like to know more about the origin of these characters’ crazy powers. The drawing is incredibly detailed and absolutely amazing throughout; I really enjoyed it. I am also very curious as to where this story is going.Overall an incredible continuation of this graphic novel series, but much more gory and violent than the first volume. I really loved the illustration and am finding the story to be incredibly intriguing. I would recommend to those who enjoy sci-fi manga.

Inuyashiki, being the hero of this book still makes a few appearances, and learns more about his powers along the way.Vol 2. is just as captivating as Vol 1, and begs for continued reading.

The art is absolutely fantastic for a start. I think he may have used real photographs at certain points to make them look like drawings, not sure it's amazing anyway. The story is disturbing. This volume concentrates on the young man who was present on the hill and needless to say, he is the antithesis to the old man; a serial killer in the making with no moral convictions at all. He doesn't seem to have any humanity left and we have his friend with him to judge his former self with his new machine self. There does seem to be a tiny vestige of what he may have been lurking inside, but we'll have to see. The old man, Inuyashiki gets his fair share of time here too though and he learns more of what he can do and tries out more of his chosen path by using his powers for good; it isn't going to be easy but it makes him feel better than anything in his life ever has so far. An interesting look at what makes us human, good vs evil, man vs machine. This volume is brutally violent, stomach churningly so and contains an almost X-rated sex scene. I'm apprehensive about the next volume. The story is deep; I want to see how Inuyashiki progresses but I'm uneasy as to where Hiro's sadistic charater will plummet. I'll be reading volume three and then we'll see if I go further.
