Taylor's Swan Song Disappoints By David Swan From an economic standpoint it makes sense for “Injustice: Gods Among Us” to be a continuing series but from an artistic or literary standpoint this is a story that screams for a beginning, middle and end. I was already feeling like Tom Taylor was straining to keep things going in the last volume but now it really feels forced. There used to be a certain level of ambiguity as to whether Superman’s actions were justifiable but that ambiguity has faded away to the detriment of the series. Despite being surrounded by some of the classic heroes of the DCU including Hal Jordan and Captain Marvel, Superman has clearly set up a worldwide totalitarian regime that rules through fear. He’s even drawn with an evil look. It has degraded into a less interesting, less provocative more black and white series.Year three is basically a crossover between Injustice and Justice League Dark. Besides Kryptonite and red sun rays, Superman other big weakness is magic so the magic users of the DCU band together to take down Superman. The group is almost exactly the roster of the JLD including Zatanna, Madam Xanadu, Deadman, Ragman and of course Constantine. I’ve read most of the JLD stories and found them lacking, to say the least. I’m cool with a team of magic based heroes but I think the way it’s been handled was pretty bad. Unfortunately, Tom Taylor has kept the same tone which surprised me because I have greater expectations of Taylor. In particular I HATED how Constantine was used. Characters always talk about what a bastard he is but he never really does anything dastardly because he’s a hero. The writers hope appears to be that if you CALL him a bastard, readers will just believe it. He’s actually just a smart ass who occasionally does things that look naughty but are always for the greater good. I recently reread the ORIGINAL Constantine, written by Alan Moore for Swamp Thing and he was NOTHING like this twit.Another character annoying me is Batman. Tom Taylor has fallen back on the old “Batman is perfect” model of the Dark Knight that is so overused. The flawless Batman is DULL and tiresome and he wasn’t this way earlier in the series. I wrote reviews praising Taylor for his ability to write dialogue and characterization but it really feels like he’s running out of gas. It feels like rather than innovate he’s just falling back on the tired characterizations of other writers. Batman can be Batman without being always right and when he’s shown to be human he’s a lot more interesting.Ok, Taylor does sort of create a conclusion at the end of this volume but it has some major problems. First of all it’s clear that it’s not a real ending since the series has continued after he left DC. The series was taken over by Brian Buccellato with the professional reviews dropping significantly. The other problem is that the ending is incredibly abrupt and unsatisfying. If this were the REAL ending it would be terrible. The art has been excellent throughout the series and remains beautiful here but this is a series that has really passed its expiration date. It should have had a REAL conclusion last volume but I assume DC was driven more by dollars than sense. It’s a shame that Taylor is no longer with DC because I think he’s a superior writer and really improved Earth 2 in his time working on there. The beginning of “Injustice: Gods Among Us” was brilliant and it’s a shame DC couldn’t shut off the lights and let the party end organically.

Greenagel Jr. This series started off fabulously (which was quite a surprise, since it was based off of a video game). The first two trades cover "year 1" and are wonderful. Trades 3 & 4 make up "year 2," and while entertaining, they don't have the same plot, character and conflict strengths as year 1. This trade is the first half of "year 3," and the story has begun to go off the rails.I'm not sure what the plan is for the series, but it seems to be just going on and on. The plot is convoluted, characters have lost their cores (in some cases, unjustifiably), and Superman has absolutely gone from a sympathetic hero who suffered a great loss to a straight-up villain who is sometimes manipulated by Sinestro. John Constantine and Batman are handled terribly here. It is that last problem that is particularly grating. It's entertaining and at times, still fun. I prefer Elseworld stories to the static life stories of whatever universe or reboot DC (or Marvel) set them in. It's just fallen off a bit from the grand start.

Tounzen This is such a fun read, if you haven't read the first two years this is not the place to start. If you caught up to this point, you will see Batman recovering from his Bane like altercation with Superman, while the Justice League Dark is brought into the mix to choose sides. This can mean a lot because one of the few things superman is weak against is Magic. This new chapter doesn't pull any punches and multiple heros/villains are taken off the board permanently. Find out which side John Constintine, Swamp Thing, Zattana, Dr Fate, The Spector, The Mysterious Stranger and more choose in this fun alternate wold of DC heros.
