When an immigrant Irish roofer plummets to his death from a South Boston building, lawyer Paul Forte steps in to settle the man’s presumably meager estate, as a favor to his friend, Dublin reporter Finola McGee. A routine probate matter, he thought, until he discovers the penthouse condo, the top-of-the-line Harley and credit card statements reflecting a fondness for Las Vegas. In Ireland, Finola’s human interest story about the tragedy prompts several Irish widows to inform her of similar accidents in the States. In each case, the laborers had been beneficiaries of CRAIC, an Irish “charity” run by ex-politician Finbarr Murphy; their lives had been insured for substantial amounts; and their widows did not receive what they were due. When insidious political forces (and a little blackmail) impel her editor to silence her, Finola smells another big story. She is convinced CRAIC is another word for scam. As Paul and Finola team up once again to plumb the depths of Irish treachery, secrets are divulged, privileges violated, punches thrown, loyalties shredded and bombs ignited; but it takes a meddling amateur to unmask the saboteur.

Half Irish, by Pete Morin, Susanne O'Leary

Review An entertaining and suspenseful romp through the Irish and American political system, FULL IRISH is a compulsively readable novel.  ~IndieReader

About the Author Pete Morin is a former politician, bureaucrat and lobbyist, now trial lawyer, blues guitarist and crime novelist. When he is not writing crime fiction or legal mumbo jumbo, Pete plays blues guitar in Boston bars, and on rare occasion, plays a round of golf or two. He lives in a money pit on the seacoast south of Boston, in an area once known as the Irish Riviera. Pete is represented by Christine Witthohn of Book Cents Literary Agency. Susanne O’Leary has been the wife of a diplomat (still is), a fitness teacher and a translator. She now writes full-time from either of two locations, a ramshackle house just outside Cahir, County Tipperary or a little cottage overlooking the Atlantic in Dingle, County Kerry. When she is not scaling the mountains of said counties, or keeps fit in the local gym, she writes books in a number of genres; contemporary romance, romantic comedy, historical fiction and, recently, detective. Many of her fifteen novels have been bestsellers.

By Don Sloan Murder, money and crooked lawyers all figure prominently in this excellent new mystery by co-authors Pete Morin and Suzanne O'Leary. It's one of the most well-written whodunits I've seen in quite a while. What do Dermot, Kieran and Sean have in common? Besides being Irish, and relatively new to America, they all died in mysterious circumstances at construction sites. And, their widows back in Ireland all got far less than their insurance policies paid out. Who's to blame, and who is profiting? The reader finds that out -- partially, at least -- early on.But proving it. Ah, there's the true brilliance of the story. This finely crafted tale plays out deliciously as Boston attorney Paul Forte teams up with Dublin journalist Finola McGee to unravel a twisted skein of deceit, lies and fraud leading to the much darker matter of willful murder. There are eligible suspects galore in the scheme that lures unemployed Irish laborers to the United States in search of lucrative jobs. But when one, then two, then three lads are killed at construction sites scattered around the U.S. -- well, it's just a bit too coincidental to suit Forte and McGee.Written by an attorney and an Irish national, respectively, this novel is packed with satisfying detail about American legal intricacies and a wealth of local color about Irish politics and chicanery. You'll soon be rooting for these painstaking investigators and their small but efficient cadre of assistants. And I love the outstanding dialogue and the enticing turns-of-phrase scattered throughout the book:"Rex's bushy eyebrows jumped around his forehead."And:"He was soft as a grape by then."Through Georgia's finest golf course fairways, Chicago's Merchandize Mart and a wild, Jerry Springer-type show in Dublin, the story winds toward its climax. But not before we are served another tasty literary bon mot:"Looks like Superman and Mother Teresa rolled into one."Five stars to this entertaining read. And, to mystery lovers everywhere, a new tag team of stellar investigators has emerged.

By M.A. Stanley I received this book for a free review and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately purchased the other two books in the series. Although this is a stand-alone novel, I’d highly recommend buying the books in order. (book 1: Diary of a Small Fish; book 2: Full Irish – both are available on Amazon)When attorney Paul Forte is asked to assist in a simple probate matter by his friend, Dublin reporter, Finola McGee, he agrees without hesitation. As he begins the process of documenting the dead man’s estate, he discovers a lifestyle that contradicts the widow’s statements of the man. The discovery of several other victims much like the dead man leads Paul and Finola into an investigation that spans from Boston to Ireland and involves murder, corruption and deceit.I admit that I am not a fan of novels with political overtones, but I found it refreshing that the author focused on the corruptive and corrosive nature of politicians and politics as a whole instead of invoking bipartisan blame which seems so prevalent in novels with any political content. This is a well thought out mystery with a fantastic plot and great characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it and as mentioned above, was spurred to purchase and read the other two books right away. This book was provided to me for free for an honest and unbiased review (see all our reviews at http://www.bookexplosions.com/ or on Goodreads at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/131875-book-explosions )

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Half Irish By BigAl Once again, Boston attorney Paul Forte and Dublin reporter Finola McGee team up to get to the bottom of a cross-Atlantic crime. As with Full Irish, the first book in the series, this was a fun read. The scam Paul and Finola investigate seems plausible with tension increasing as they uncover the details of exactly what is going on.One aspect of this series, setting it apart from a run-of-the-mill mystery or thriller, is the differences between the US and Ireland. These are an integral part of the story, giving these books a unique feel and perspective.**Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. **

From the author of The Cotswolds Werewolf comes a new collection of Sherlock Holmes pastiches in the vein of Conan Doyle, revealing for the first time the secrets behind the theft of the hobnailed boots, the mysterious madness of the Right Honourable Wilfred Crabb, the case of the haunted public house, the curious and seemingly supernatural events surrounding a remote hotel on the east coast, and the truth behind the strange disappearance of Cyrus Thicknesse, the man in the sensible necktie. “I must say, Holmes, I am a bit surprised to see you taking an interest in something based on sympathy.” “You do not think me sympathetic?” “Of course I do. But you have said yourself that it is the rational challenge and not the human aspect that draws you to your cases. Humans are mere factors in a problem, I think were your words.” “Did I really say that? Hm, well, I am an odd sort, am I not?”

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Mr. Andersson brings us more tales of the True Sherlock Holmes By Holmes Fan I’m a missionary for the True Sherlock Holmes, the correct one as first described by Watson’s literary agent, Doyle. That one is set in the correct time period and isn’t called “Sherlock” by “John”. He’s not a damaged barely-functioning drug-destroyed slob or high-functioning sociopath that can only keep it together through Watson’s caretaking. Go back and read The Canon – none of that is Holmes. Speaking as an agent working tirelessly to promote the True Holmes, I heartily endorse the works of Peter K. Andersson. His first book, “The Cotswolds Werewolf and Other Stories of Sherlock Holmes” (2014) contained a novella and four short stories. There wasn’t a dud in the bunch. Then, Mr. Andersson contributed another excellent story to the incredible three-volume Holmes collection, “The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories” (2015). Now his latest volume has arrived, and as expected, it’s another winner. When I received it, I couldn’t wait to read it, and I wasn’t disappointed.“The Sensible Necktie and Other Stories of Sherlock Holmes” contains nine new short stories, all spaced throughout Holmes’s career. Clearly, Andersson has found his way to one of Watson’s Tin Dispatch Boxes. Everything sounds the way it should, and I don’t have to worry as I begin each new story – as I do when reading some other newly-discovered Watsonian Tales – that I’m going to be making a lot of notes about something that ended up being incorrect. Mr. Andersson can be trusted to bring us the True Holmes, and I’m already looking forward to his next efforts.

Although it lacks the polish and details provided by other writers, the stories are short, simple and filled with the elements I look for when selecting Holmes/Watson pastiches. Possibly I'm reading too much into the topic but I imagine these stories would have been among the earliest written by Conan Doyle. Absent are pictures, annotations or large amounts of physical action. They are straight-up no-chaser stories that are very well done.

By Patt O'Neil This book was a collection of nice little stories that fit well within the canon of Sherlock Holmes as ACD envisioned him. Though some of the plots were a little thin I must praise the author for his portrayal of Watson as an intelligent and sensitive. The friendly banter between Holmes and Watson was quite believable and expected from good friends and flat mates. I would recommend this book to other fans of Holmes and Watson.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A incredibly well done and emotional conclusion to the Chi's Sweet Home series! By Karissa Eckert This was an excellent conclusion to the Chi’s Sweet Home series. My whole family has loved reading this very cute seinen manga featuring a young family with an inquisitive cat.Chi has finally realized that the grey striped cat is her mom. This happens right around the same time her human family realizes that missing cat posters are looking for Chi. The family is torn; should they bring Chi back to her original home? Or do they keep her with them? They are relocating to France and need to decide before they make the move. Yohei, their toddler, is dead set against losing his best friend. In the end the only one who can make the decision is Chi herself. This was a surprisingly tense and emotional Chi’s Sweet Home. Chi has to make a tough choice: live with her siblings and mom or live with the human family she loves. Chi is just as cute as ever, but there definitely isn’t a lot of humor in here.Normally I say that this manga is for all ages; but there are a couple scenes in here that might be a little intense for very young readers. There is a scene where Chi’s kitty mom protects Chi and is injured which had my eight year old very concerned. Then at the end Chi is racing against time to get where she wants to be; this scene again had my son very upset because he was very concerned Chi wouldn’t make it home in time. These scenes are both intense and very sweet. To be honest everyone in the family was a bit emotional over the outcome; we have just grown to love this family and little cat so much.As with all the other volumes this one is well illustrated and has beautiful pastel colors and incredibly cute kitties. We really enjoyed the illustration. This volume does wrap up the Chi’s Sweet Home series very nicely. Although to be honest we were all a bit disappointed and sad to see it end.The only thing that wasn’t wrapped up was some of the side character plots. All of us wanted to know; what about Cocchi? Will he be alone forever?Overall a spectacular wrap up to the Chi’s Sweet Home series; really really well done. This is an excellent seinen manga that cat lovers of all ages will enjoy. I highly recommended it. Now can we please see a spin-off series where Cocchi gets some resolution too? Pretty Please?

An emotional and satisfying conclusion By Keiichi Godai As someone who's been reading this since the series started in the U.S., it's sad to see it come to an end, but at least this is a satisfying and emotional conclusion to what has been a wonderful and warm series. In this final volume, Chi finds herself caught between two worlds, as she must choose between her human family (the Yamadas), and her birth mother and siblings. The Yamadas are about to move to Paris, and they must also decide what is best for the little kitten that has become a part of their family. This is somewhat of a more dramatic volume than previous, as there are no kitty hijinks to be found here. It's focused solely on the characters, and the decisions that they have to make that will effect their lives forever.Konami Kanata has shown a real gift for blending humor with emotion during the course of the comic, and that's no more evident than here. We feel for these characters, and we sympathize, because there are no right and wrong answers. No matter what is decided for Chi's future, someone will be hurt. But don't worry. It all ends happily in the end, and we even get a nice little special epilogue that shows where the characters ended up.As a long-time cat owner, this has been a wonderful find, and I have enjoyed following the adventures of Chi and her friends. It not only understands the nature of cats, but has more human emotion than you might expect.Thank you, Konami Kanata, for your wonderful characters and stories over the past few years!

I'm sad that this amazing series is over but it has been a fun adventure and journey for us (the readers), Chi, and the Yamada family. The art is amazing as always! :) I love that this comic is in colour! I haven't seen many comics that are printed in colour! I love the water colours used in this story! I hope others enjoy this comic too! :)

Interesting new Clone Wars era series following the lead character of 'Star Wars Rebels' TV show By Kenneth Allan This series follows Kanan, the so-called 'Last Padawan', and main character of the currently running 'Star Wars Rebels' TV series. While this series is not quite as good as 'Star Wars' or 'Darth Vader', it is still enjoyable, and does a lot with very little familiar territory.Kanan picks up during 'Order 66', as the clones betray the Jedi and begin wiping them out. Kanan is forced to make a new life, and the story follows him there. Although we don't really get any big story arcs with this first volume, it's worth a read and I'd recommend staying tuned for the second to see whether it gets better.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. I Need More!! By Andrew I loved this!!! I need there to be a second one right this second! Now I'm not your typical star wars fan because if I'm being honest I prefer the prequel era to the original trilogy. I just find it more interesting I I think the Clone wars TV series is the best thing ever made under the star wars name. And I'm so happy that Disney isn't just ignoring this era like ibwas worried they would. This is great I love seeing kanan as a young Jedi I wished they showed a little more of him during the war itself but oh well I find the character fascinating and I didn't want to put the book down! It's fantastic.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Kanan right after Order 66 By PWDecker Kanan is a new character to Rebels, but he was around during the Clone Wars. We've already had an origin story of him meeting Hera in A New Dawn, but this story goes back farther to the moment that ended the Clone Wars, Order 66. This is the first in-depth account of Order 66 in the new canon, other than the film. The relationship between Kanan and the clone troopers is very interesting. I'm very interested to see that relationship more if its origin is explored in Volume 2.This graphic novel reminded me of some of the Dark Times dark horse comics. It was cool to see the events that made Kanan the way he is. It was also very cool to see the Rebels crew drawn in a different style.I give this graphic novel a 5/5. I look forward to the next volume.
