As many note, the end of the "golden era" of Tracy, but still some interesting villains to come. Of the stories in this volume, the only one I was aware of was the second half of the Spots storyline and a little of the Beardsley story. I do look forward to the "Moon era" mainly because I recall some as a kid, and want to (re)read that period. Its coming up quickly. We have several longish stories in this one, including another foray to a different local. We first wrap up the Rhodent storyline. "Fatty" McDonald, a young girl that saw Rhodent, is under police protection. "Fatty" is a former fat girl who lost weight. Maybe too much, as she looks anorexic and skeletal. Policewoman Lizz takes her place at old McDonald's pig farm. Good thing she does, as Rhodent sends thug Halffa Millyon to bump her off, but get bumped off himself!Rhodent, still on the run, gets desperate. He winds up killing old McDonald, then kidnaps "Fatty". There is then a car chase, where Rhodent has a fatal and final end (it was a little interesting to see them use forensic evidence for this. This was cutting edge stuff at the time, not CSI or the like). "Fatty" is found and rescued by some other pig farmers named Smally Hoag and his mother. Maybe "Fatty" moves in with them, but we never know. (maybe a planned storyline that never happened??)But Lizz bumping off Haffa Millyon leads to the next storyline with new villain "Fifth" (actually, "Willy the Fifth" Millyon, brother of Haffa) and his crooked "lawyer" Flyface, along with Fifth's girlfriend Olive Tomate. But before that Lizz goes on a tv show hosted by an ambush reporter Mattie Munkie, who turns out the worse for wear. He wants to embarras Lizz, but gets tossed and looses his voice. He looses his job as well, in part because he lost his voice, but also because he is rude and obnoxious. The Fifth wants to use Munkie to go after Lizz in revenge for killing his brother. Flyface uses a giant lens on the roof of the building to torture Munkie to help them set a trap. and when they get both Tracy and Lizz, they use the lens to torture Lizz. But Tracy frees himself and Lizz, but Fifth and Flyface are on the lam.We see that Fifth is the head of a crime syndicate when he later sits down with his 6 lieutenant for a meeting, all bald men we see only from behind. But Flyface soon takes over. But after we met Flyface's mother and nephew, the two are captured and jailed. In the strips around Christmas for 1959, we again catch up with the Plenty's. Little Wing is still with them, but the next time we see them, she has been written out of the strip (going with an aunt to Australia). A highway has been built over Sunny Dale acres. (don't know if I remember that from later strips or not)Then we get a long trip to Hawaii. This is spurred when a former surfboard champion who does a nightclub act, Haku Kou, is found beaten and left in a car that goes over the highway near Sunny Dale Acres. This leads to a criminal conspiracy that takes Tracy and friends to Hawaii, where Tracy teams up with local police chief Dan Liu. This criminal conspiracy is the Fifth and Flyface, who break out of jail (and in a very interesting way!). Haku Kou is working undercover to bring him to Hawaii, which he succeeds in- by flying them in a small plane. Kind of seems clear that Tracy's unnamed city is Chicago. But after landing on an island, a tidal wave hits. So what happens to the Fifth and Flyface? Read and find out.in the outcome, Tracy, Liu and Kou find an orphaned Hawaiian girl, and work to reunite her with her family. Her grandfather died in the tidal wave, and her parents died previously. What happened to them is soon figured out. (you have to wonder if Little Pineapple, the girl, was yet another attempt to create a popular child character in the strip). While Tracy and friend on Hawaii try to find any family for the little Hawaiian girl, back on the mainland we are introduced to Spots, his wife and associate Providence M Ogden. These are our next grotesques. Spots and Ogden have a scheme of bulking small clubs and organizations of money by presenting them plaques from "The National Committee" for the work they do. Spots and Ogden are the National Committee! When they learn that little Pineapple will inherit $100,000 and they are looking for her aunt, who has a pineapple tattooed on her ankle, they look to replace the aunt with Spot's wife. What luck for them that the aunt lives in the same town as they do, which is also Tracy's town.Things go wrong, and Spots and Ogden are on the lam and make for Ogden's "studio", where he retreats to write poetry. His studio is located in an old WWII tank located in a city park, that he has converted to a little hideaway, with power and water. But the police come closer and closer,Before the story of Spots and Ogden closes, the next storyline starts with the appearance of Fresh and her mother Burpie Upp, who forces Fresh to abandon her baby, who has a beard! Odgen and Spots sees this and tries to blackmail them over it.Sadly, as expected, things don't turn out to well for Burpie, Ogden, and Spots. Fresh is reunited with her baby, and we learn who her late husband was: Johnny Hada Plenty. Yup, a nephew of BO. This brings back the Plentys into the storyline, and we learn the Sparkle has gotten fat! (fat seems a theme with several characters in this volume, with "Fatty", Spots wife whom Spots calls fat, and now Sparkle).Fresh and "Little Boy Beard" story is incomplete at the end of the volume. Someone has tried to bump him off. Thankfully, Fresh's Aunt Soso shows up to help her out. Or is she? (and I do wonder if the Beard Boy was yet another attempt, after LIttle Pineapple, to YET again create a popular child character.)We'll have to wait for the next volume to find out what happens. And looks like we get some more grotesques I've never heard of.Can't wait!As always, this volume is rounded out by other articles for the intro and background, which delves into the storylines and the characters and where Gould got some of his info. Thought it interesting that the book mentioned in the Tracy strip about Hawaii is real and one he used for his research. I wonder if this lead to an increase in sales for it?More to come as I finish up this review!!!

"Fatty" was creepy, Rhodent was ad grotesque as to make Sam suspect he was wearing a rubber mask- And how could the MCU unit presume that Rhodent wouldn't try again to kill Fatty? She could have sued, The Rhodent's demise is great dramatic scene, though- Flyface and Fifth: 8. The story is coherent and suspenseful, the villains characterized and well detailed, I like Lizz taking center stage, and the tidal wave scene masterful Only flaw: Flyface's family. UGH!- Spots and Ogden:8. A story in wich humour and drama are well balanced. Spots is a bit flat as a villain, but Ogden is a fabulous comicrelief,- Fresh and Burpie Upp and Little Boy Beard: 4. Burpie deserved richly to be tossed from that building's roof. For the rest, Gould at his pathetic worst. Anf fat Sparkle! What was Gould thinking?- Aunt Soso and Tarter Soss: the story is at the very beginning, evaluation at the next volume. It is evident that, after the Flattop Jr story, Gould was experimenting new venues to keep with changing tims. Exotic locations (Cuba andHawaii), a foray in the comic-grotesque ( Flyface and Spots); the experimentations will continue with the weird story of Brush and the creepy story of Olga and Smallmouth Bass, referring to the issues of fallout and heart transplants. But with the space race Gould thought he'd found his narrative gold mine. I look forward to see the Moon Period stories, controversial yet creative!

By jww Willie the Fifth, Flyface, and Spots are all fun villains but both their storylines have pacing issues and the Willie/Flyface story goes on too long. The Rhodent story has it's moments but also peters out. A fun read for Tracy fans, but definitely not what you'd suggest to someone who's never read Tracy.
