By Brandi Flowers This is my second Damianos book and I must say this lived up to my expectations! I liked this even better than the first horror suspense thriller that I got a week ago. The author started the novella with chilling images of murder and sustained the excitement until the end. I didn’t like the ending though. Murderers should not be dealt with any form of mercy!! Nevertheless, once again John Stone did a fantastic job!

The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence, by Stan Lee, Stuart Moore

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—In legendary comic creator Lee's first prose novel, two factions, each comprised of people who harness animal power from the Chinese zodiac, fight to control the fate of the world. While visiting a museum in China, Steven Lee's life changes forever when he follows his mysterious tour guide's screams for help, leading him to a secret room where Maxwell, a power hungry war contractor, accidentally releases an ancient power into the world. Now equipped with the aggressive fighting prowess of the Tiger, Steven teams up with Jasmine, a fake tour guide who has been fighting Maxwell's group for years, to travel the world and find the other hosts. Along with a feisty singer, a brawler from Ireland, a techie, and an extremely shy girl, Steven must learn to control his powers. The first installment in a planned trilogy, Zodiac has everything readers would expect from Stan Lee: plenty of action, a fast-paced plot, a villain who is driven more by misguided ideals than pure evil, and a group of young, ordinary people trying to make sense of their newfound powers. Illustrations by Tong, known for his work on superhero comics in the UK, add to the book's appeal. A cliff-hanger ending leaves readers wanting more. Give this to superhero enthusiasts and fans of adventure stories; it will fly off the shelves.—Marissa Lieberman, East Orange Public Library, NJ

Review ''This action-driven outing is very much what [Stan Lee's] fans might expect . . . desperate chases, bombastic banter, and increasing spectacular confrontations . . . This frenetic light adventure should please readers who already love the Marvel universe and nurse their own dreams of superpowered glory.'' --Publishers Weekly

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I Expected More From Stan Lee By Jon (Scott Reads It!) When a book has Stan Lee’s name on it, you expect great things from the man who helped turn Marvel into an international sensation. The Convergence is the first in a planned series that tackles a team of young superheroes who each have a special power based on their zodiac sign. So much of this novel is a setup for our story and establishes what the Zodiac is and so, not enough time is devoted to developing our characters. The heroes and villains are almost cartoonish in nature and are mere husks, devoid of much personality. Steven Lee is a Chinese-American teenager who struggles to balance his heritage and American culture. He’s never really felt like he’s been apart of anything and has felt like an outsider his whole life. When he finds out that he is a Tiger and is asked to join the Zodiac, it seems like this is what he’s been waiting for along. To defeat Maxwell, Steven and his team leader Jasmine need to recruit other Zodiac team members from all over the globe. I applaud Lee and Moore for including very diverse characters from a variety of backgrounds, making this team more relatable. I believe that reader’s will find Steven’s cultural struggle very realistic and will only make him easier to empathize with. Considering that the majority of superheroes out there are white, it’s refreshing to see that Stan Lee is following Marvel’s mission to make superheroes more diverse in The Convergence. Zodiac will definitely appeal to those who loved Ms. Marvel and the female Thor and this novel is the answer to the public’s appeal for a different kind of hero. Zodiac has a large cast of characters and many of them aren’t given enough page time causing the majority of the characters to be pretty basic. Steven and Jasmine are the only characters whose personalities had any substance, everyone else’s characters are vague and lacking. In addition, we’re never given the opportunity to understand the motives of the villains, beyond the fact that they’re evil. I wanted to understand why someone would destroy a city and plan on destroying the whole world next. While Zodiac is very readable and addicting, it lacked the heart and soul that was apparent in classic Marvel comics. This is a decent series opener and my interest is definitely piqued, but I expected more from Stan Lee.

While the beginning is a bit transparent, it is sure to appeal to middle grades readers craving action. From the first few pages all the way through to the end, action takes the center stage. There's a bit of literary merit with foreshadowing and some minor character development, but the star of this novel is the fast-paced adventure. A phenomenal addition is the comic-book style action graphics spread generously throughout. Well-crafted and engaging, I almost think the illustrations were the best part of this book. I think I'd prefer seeing it in a graphic novel format if this illustrator does the work. They were fantastic! The parents' initial acceptance of Steven's disappearance is a bit too abrupt, as are some other plot actions. This is the main reason why I can't give it higher than a 3-star rating. This is a good choice for readers making the transition from graphic novel to old-school formats as well as for those readers who are Marvel and related super hero fans.

Chapter by Chapter's Review of Zodiac By MaryAnn As somebody who is a big fan of comic books in general, I was eager to get reading The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence by Stan Lee. (And yes that Stan Lee). Usually, I’m a bit hesitant towards reading novels that are claimed to be middle grade but I couldn’t resist. The Chinese zodiac is always something that I’ve been inclined towards and finding out that the main character’s sign, a particularly important fact in the plot, is a tiger grasped my attention. I needed to know what would happen to my fellow tiger and delved into the innovative world of The Zodiac Legacy. In The Zodiac Legacy, teen Steven Lee witnesses something beyond his wildest dreams. While on a school trip, he watches as a man named Maxwell unleashes the power of the Zodiac into the world. Maxwell wants nothing more than to absorb each zodiac’s superpower into his body. What Maxwell, the Dragon, doesn’t expect is for Steven to absorb the Tiger into his body. And what Maxwell can’t anticipate is the assistance he receives in thwarting his maniacal schemes in the form of a woman named Jasmine and her companion, Carlos. With the remaining powers of the Zodiac absorbed into numerous other people around the planet, it’s up to Steven, Jasmine, and Carlos to find them and teach them how to use their newfound powers. Lest Maxwell find them first and take them for himself. What I love, love, loved about The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence was the illustrations. Every few pages there would be some wonderfully drawn pictures, detailing the scene. For a novel dealing with a bunch of characters who literally wake up with super powers, it was interesting to get a bit of a comic book-y vibe while reading. Not to mention that, considering the sometimes limited detailing in a scene, it was nice to get an exact visual of what was going on. These images definitely helped get messages across often in the novel. The entire cast of characters in The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence are extremely diverse and well-written. No two characters are the same and I’m certain that readers will be able to find somebody who they can relate to while reading. Personally, I took a liking towards Jasmine and her backstory. Not to mention he is a total badass lady who could kick you into a wall and have you thank her for it. She’s calm (mostly), she’s cool, she is insanely awesome. Every scene that featured her were ones that I absolutely adored. Also, the point of view (POV) of the novel constantly changes with the cast. We get to see the story through the eyes of the good guys and the bad guys. It leaves readers on the edge of their seats, excited to find out what happens next in the story. While there were instances where I, an older teenage girl, found certain pieces of dialogue and certain scenes to be a bit campy, I think that younger readers will definitely enjoy reading The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence. It’s a new take on superheroes without the masks and capes and is written in a way that will have you eager for the next installment in the series.I would recommend The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence to readers who are younger (10-13 age demographic) and interested in starting lengthier reads. Any readers who want an imaginative story that features a ton of action, or just want a novel that will keep them guessing, should also give the story a shot.
