About the Author Beginning his career in comic books as a freelance artist in 1990, David Lapham founded El Capitan Books in 1995 exclusively to publish his Eisner Award-winning crime comic book series, Stray Bullets. Wells Collecting: Spider Island (2015) #1-5In the latest multi-verse shattering Marvel event, Secret Wars, the multiverse collapses. Parallel alternate earths have been collapsing into one another leaving only one Earth with a patchwork of warring zones inhabited by pieces of these alternate realities. This warzone takes inspiration from one of the best Spidey-centered stories in a long time, Spider-Man: Spider-Island.This book consists of two stories, a really well done Venom versus the spider queen main story and a mediocre Spider Girl backup story. In the main story, the spider plague has taken over Manhattan. Everyone, human and superhuman alike, is corrupted by the spider plague and turned into spider-versions of their former selves controlled by an evil spider queen. The remnants of humanity not contaminated by the plague are holed up underground, relentlessly pursued by the spider queen's army, defended by an unlikely team of superheroes led by Venom (also including Spider-Woman, Vision, and Werewolf-by-Night.This main story works well because writer Christos Gage keeps the odds long and hope alive. Artist Paco Diaz has a lot of fun with creating Spider-infected versions of superheroes. The multi-eyed Spider Captain Marvel and multi-armed Spider Hulk were especially memorable.Unfortunately Tom Defalco's Spider Girl story interspersed throughout this book felt like a rather annoying commercial break in Gage's compelling story. Neither the artwork nor the alternate-earth female Captain America (renamed American Dream, and marshaling a Dream Team) seemed to gel for this reader.If you enjoyed Spider Island, or if you're keeping up with Secret Wars, then this book is a good installment for Spider-fans. The main story is a gripping read. Personally, I'd recommend fast forwarding the Spider-Girl interludes, but altogether this book is good.

By Spidey More of a "What If Spider-Man Lost During the Spider-Island Event?" story than a Secret Wars crossover. The only tie in to Secret Wars is on the last page. A Thor shows up after the story is over to see what's going on. This story was OK. It was kind of hokey how the Spider Queen loses her influence over people. The backup story was just a further tale from the world that Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz created back in the 90's with Spider-Girl where all the Marvel characters had children. It was just a story where every character from the 90's books showed up to fight. I really disliked that the 2 stories kept alternating back and forth. Given that this is a collection and the stories are not related I would rather have had each of the stories separated into start to finish order.
